Post subject:  Bad things that happen in bars
Recently there was an incident at a bar relatively close to the one I frequent.  There was a guy who was trying to leave who had WAY too much to drink.  A good samaritan was trying to convince him not to drive when the drunk guy gets into his truck and then ran over the guy trying to help him...he was run over ....twice...He died.....He wasn't even 40..... :bawling:

This has had a very profound effect on me and I wonder if there is something that can be done or that is being done to prevent things such as this....

How responsible are the bartenders in your bar??  Do they cut people off when they feel they have had too much?  Or do they laugh about it and let them walk out the door and just don't care?

It just seems like since this happend I am more aware of how much people are drinking and it freaking me out.

The 4 bars I work at have a policy, if you need/want a ride, you will get one, even if you don't want one.  They have posters at the door and in the bathrooms say that if you are too drunk to drive, ask a bartender and they will find you a safe way home.  I have used their help/rides oin a couple of occasions, even to get a ride to another bar.  It customer service!

Oh my gosh, that's horrible.

Where I go, it's pretty much that most of all of us know each other. Many times I've heard the question "You need me to call a cab?", or "Do you have someone to drive you?"....... the bartenders seem to really watch for that kind of thing, as do some of the regular patrons. NOT to say people have never left too tipsy to drive, but you see alot of offers to get people home safely.  I've seen one of the bartenders follow someone out to stop them from getting behind the wheel.

And- Denny's on a friday or saturday night- usually has policeman in the parking lot. Since it's about the only popular place in town for people to be drinking, and the ONLY place doing karaoke right now..... they keep an eye out.

Someone being ignorant enough to go out- alone- and let themself get wasted enough to do something like that- is downright stupid IMO. The guy will pay for it the rest of his life now.... not to mention the one who lost his life.... and all due to having too many drinks.

Our owners and bartenders are very watchful...if they come in that way...they are not served...and aren't let go...SOMEONE always drives them home. Many a night croakie and i drive someone home after...or they stay at our house...and we take them back for their car the next day.

In our state, the bartender and owners can be held responsible if they served alcohol to a visibly intoxicated person who then caused an accident.

Alcohol and SOME people is a deadly combo.   What more can be said  :(
It's a really strong hypnotic depressant.

Is it any mystery ?     Bad things happen especially when alcohol, testosterone, and certain aspects of brain chemistry mix.  It'd be interesting as to whether or not there are any statistical studies regarding incident of "bad things" happening in juice bars, vs regular bars.

sad, very sad. The good samaritan went TOO far in his efforts in trying to stop the driver.

Try to take away their keys. but once they get NEAR the vehicle, stand clear. As you so clearly showed, the drunk was so wiped that he didn't even know he ran over the poor soul!

There was actually a bar here where this girl got uber snookered and drove off drunk. About 15 miles does the road she hit another driver head on. The other driver survived but the drunk woman died.

In the ensuing law suit, the family of the drunk driver sued the bar. The family of the drunk driver is now the owner of the bar. The bar was found 100% liable and the owner lost everything to the family of a drunk driver who killed herself.

I'm not saying this is totally illogical, but it sure is sketchy as far as personal responsibility is concerned. In most states, it is technically illegal for a bar to allow you to get drunk, although the situation rarely presents itself where they are prosecuted for this.

Everyone be careful out there!!

Oh how aweful!!!
People get over served at my bar all the time. Most people are smart enough not to drive. I think the patrons look after their friends more than the bar employees though.
A lot of the worst drinkers have lost their licenses to DUIs. It is amazing how many people have gotten a DUI. If you think about it anyone who has been in a bar all night is probably over the legal limit, but everyone drives home. Hmmmm

It is really sad that another innocent person got killed, but it is unfortunately a big whoopie here in the states for people to drink and drive. How many people do you know do drink and drive. Just read the forums hear and people proudly will let you know just how many times they have been drunk and irresponsible.

Where I come from, it was not even a discussion. There is no thing as a DUI, or a fine, or a way to get out of it. They have a zero tolerance, and the limit is zero as well, anything over that and you loose your driver’s license for 2 years, no questions asked, no excuses accepted.

That’s the way it should be here as well. There are way too many deaths and broken families due to drinking and driving. I couldn’t care less about anyone’s argument about 1 or 2 drinks/beers. The fact is, if you drink, your reactions are influenced.

Thanks, I was wondering where (literally) in the world had such strict laws with alchohol (I can't spell today).  Very interesting..I think I'll do some research and find out more on these areas.....I just love looking stuff up and learning new things....Thanks!! :handshake:

The UAE and Bahrain are definite exceptions to that...but they ARE quite a bit more secular than some of the other countries in that part of the world.

There are dry districts even in Connecticut (as well as elsewhere in the country) that do not sell alcohol, aren't allowed to serve alcohol, and have an extremely strict open container outdoor law forbidding it to be consumed in view even on private property..


Not sure but I also believe there are some Indian districts that do not allow it because of their higher rate of trouble with the substance. Alaska for instance (the aleutians) have ports that are dry areas.  Most that have sailed into these ports are aware of this. Strict liquor laws in these particular areas

They are pretty strict around here (St. Charles, MO, near St. Louis).  Bartenders (and the bar) can be held liable.  Some places have strict rules on sales, like where my oldest son works, they can and have fired bartenders/servers for continued sales to people that have had too much.  

Of course, my younger son is on the other side, as he is still on probation after just getting his drivers license back after a 1 year suspension (and mandatory AA and counseling classes, and random pee-pee tests (wasnt sure if I could say urine test here.).  That was his second DUI, and they really get tuff.  Seems the county we are in is more strict that surrounding areas - but that may not be such a bad thing......
