Folks,
I am going to pick up some new multipurpuse speakers 30%DJ, 30%KJ and the rest of the time for sound reinforcement for my 5 piece band.   I want something with warm midrange.  Anyone hear the Cerwin-Vega Prostax 15 inch 3-way speakers or the CV intense 15 inch 2-way?  I  I would pick up the subs with either of these sets.   I am having a hardtime finding reviews on teh CV gear...

The other thing that caught my eye was the JBL MP225 with the dual 15inch cones.  The bottom is supposed to be set as a sub.  Has anyone heard the the JRX175 models?

I also saw the MP410...  Any opinions on how they compare to the JRX 15 incher cabs that seem to be so popular.

I have considered the Eon 15inch G2s as well but I feel really bad not using my amps that are all nice and neatly intregrated into my roller case.  Right now my band uses some of the g1 EONs but I am not sure how much the sound has improved.

Are there any other higher end brands or specific cabs anyone reccomends.

I would appreciate anyones thoughts!
Thanks!
Bob

Cerwin Vega is generally geared for dj most of the time.  The "ProStax" was designed to break them out of that, but I honestly haven't heard them yet.
The JBL MP 200 series is a step up from their JRX series which is bottom of the chain.
The MP 400 series are as close to the SR series as you are going to get for lower cost.  The MP410 is a good all around cabinet, however you can't compare it to the JRX115, the 410 is a 10" driver - GREAT for mids & highs, but if you are going to try to push bass through them, you would definitely want to use a sub.  Compare them to the MP415 & there isn't a competition.
The JRX series was designed to compete with some of the other lower quality speakers out there - however do a bit better job at it.  Lower power handling, but decent sound.  They are popular because of the price which many look at first these days.

There are other higher end gear to look for, but it's all budget dependant.  If I were going to be running live sound for the majority of the time, I would probably look into the JBL SRX series or McCauley brand speakers that are designed to handle the vigors of live music.  But these are also quite spendy, but nearly destruction proof with the right amps behind them.  Not saying that's what you need, however there is a difference in $300 speaker vs $1300 or better speaker.

Cerwin Vega has made big improvements over the years but still produce a sub average product in my opinion.

I have never heard anyone ask for warm midrange. Most current music the mid has been dropped.

The difference between JBL JRX and MPro is the rated watts JRX are 250 watts program the MPro are 350 watts program and have better drivers.

If you plan to do sound reinforcement the best setup would be 2 - 15" mains and 2 18" subs. As far as the model if you plan to use them for a band I would setup up to the M-pros.

Go 2 JBL MPro 415's and 2 JBL MPro.

I'd power the subs with a Crown XS900
and the mains with a Crown XS700

Spend the $$ and pick Up a DBX Driverack.

The biggest thing with the system is the multi use purpose. For sound reinforcement you don't want to sell yourself short for a few hundred $$ of not having enough sound. Suxh a system will allow you to have some head room to crank it up and mic your kick and snare should you choose.

Thanks for the insight...  Have you ever heard the Carver club series?  They were recommended to me by a friend as extremely clean.  Their 3-way looks pretty good from the specs perspective.

I think you are right on separate 15's for mids and Highs and 2 subs.  I was thinking 15 inch subs so they would not sound so muddy in smaller low volume venues...

Thoughts,
Bob

18" subs all the way.  If you play "smaller" clubs, you won't need subs at all - as a rule.

I agree with Lonman on the 18" for subs, but 15" for mids? Why? Your mids should not really be any bigger then 12" rather 10" drivers and then powered horn for the high's.

Actually there are more people running 15" 2 ways with 18" subs technically making the 15" their low/mid driver.  I even see that more & more at live shows as well lately.  One engineer I know runs 2 JBL dual 15" w/highs (SR4733) per side stacked on top of 2 JBL dual 18" (SR4719) subs per side.  Actually sounds pretty good, I would have figured it to be kind of muddy.  Runs it all tri-amped through a BSS OmniDrive - can't remember the model.

Well I finally placed my order....   a drum roll please.....

I decided to go with an all carvin set up...

2 x 1548 Club Series 3-way cabinets  (15 inch)  400watt RMS
2 x 1801 18 inch subs 800 watts RMS with the pole adapters to put the 1584s on top.

I am going to use my 2 gemini X3 amps to drive the Subs at 600watts per cab and I bought a carvin DCM 1204 to drive the 1854s and 2 other 3-ways I have at 200watts RMS a piece. Or just the two 1854s bridged at 400 watts per cab... Not sure yet...

This configuration should allow me to use just teh 1854s or small KJ venues, killer bass for my DJ gigs and full support for my band whether we play indoors or outdoors.

I ordered through carvin direct and they were great.  It should all be here next week... I will let you know how it sounds and report back...

Thanks again for all your help!
Bob
