I'm fixing to have a spare ATX case...I want to build a full time video surveillance/home security network....You know, with several cameras and lots of storage with long term UPS....Don't need web access, just mostly lots of recording storage and motion detector triggered day/night cams than can record several cams at once.

Anyone have experience with same?

Keith,  I too have been looking into that.  Using the PC as a monitor, and motion detectors as well as strategically located cams... It's VERY affordable today.. I've got some sites stored someplace and I'll share them..

In my particular case I wanted something that dialed in directly to headquarters someplace assuming there was a problem, or the police station, but there's a pretty hefty false alarm fee in my town..

LOTS of info out there, huh?

And that's what makes it so hard for me at the moment....I gotta sort thru all of it to see what will work, but not be too expensive.

Wireless is cool due to not having to string network wires...But the cams still need power....Then there is the wired configuration that provides power and communication....There are some that require a special PCI card for each camera-would run out of card slots fast with that one or have to buy special ganged card and those a really expensive.....Then there is the USB webcams that are cheap, but limited due to being USB.....and then there is the software......

In your area perhaps, where I'm located extraneous higher-band radio interference would likely cause problems assuming I had the system running to an alarm, wouldn't be a good thing.  Not sure a passive smoke detector would be the best thing either, I'd need an ionization type detector for this area. Wiring of window sensors wouldn't be that easy either, unless you used separate magnetic type free standing built in alarm units.. and those wouldn't be as good as vibration sensitive glass units... What I do now is just have a few Emerson motion detectors strategically placed at angles covering all windows...Metal doors with Ansi grade 1 dead bolts, and a stupid $5 "Kidde" battery fire alarm... What I need here is an alarm like "Banjo"  LOL
