Post subject:  Good Songs That Hardly Ever Get Sung

I was just reminded about the fact that there are many songs out there on CDGs that very rarely get sung.  A good example of this is a song I just subbed called, "Life Turned Her That Way" by Ricky Van Shelton.  I used it on nights when I sang a lot of RVS's songs, but very much at all.  Sad thing is I really like that song.  Most of the time I find myself picking songs that are sure fired crowd pleasers.  Another one like that is, "I Sang Dixie" by Dwight Yokam.   Maybe you might know a few.....

Vern Gosdin

Alot of the lesser know Charley Pride, Hank Williams Sr. (NEVER heard "My Buckets Got A Hole In It" or some of his others), George Jones (only heard a few of his)...

Nevermind, my list could go on too long.

I love that song "I Sang Dixie"......

Problem with alot of really good old ones- they are NOT out there on karaoke.

I've been digging high & low for the song "I Still Miss Someone"..... originally by Johnny Cash, but Emmy Lou did it also. And it's not to be found. :(  I tried to even make a guitar track to sing it to, but I'm just not getting a good enough track. (could it be my playing? Lol...... most likely!!)

I'll have to go listen to your Shelton song, that's a good one too, and you're right- not sang very much.

I've heard a lot of people (mostly kj's) sing "Pride and Joy".

that's one of the ones i do, but i prefer Cold Shot and Look at Little Sister.  The House is Rockin' isn't bad, but it's a little redundant!

I seem to be the only person around that sings "Rockin' at Midnight" by the Honeydrippers.  From what I can see there is only one version of it on All Hits.

I like to sing a lot of the old comical songs like "Kung Fu Fighting" or "Snoopy and The Red Baron" or Ray Stevens...I do include some Monty Python if the audience is loose enough.  I haven't seen many others do any of these

I agree with the other comments on Stevie Ray plus not many people do the Blues which are some of my favourites to sing.

I just did some Bruce Springsteen "The Boss" last week at karaoke. I started with "Born To Run", then did "Dancing In The Dark".
Although, I had to bring the cdg myself. The only one they had in the books was "Born In The USA". I thought the boss was more popular than that?  :headscratch:
I really enjoy the musical content of his songs...keyboards...saxophone...etc...and my voice fits his to a "T" I think.

Anyhow, everyone has their own opinion of what is good music and what isn't. The good thing is...freedom of listening. Isn't all music the greatest?

I have had a problem finding some of the music I want to sing too.....and KJs rarely have them.....

I hate when a computerized KJ tells me there isn't anything they haven't got.....most of the stuff I sing they never have......case in point....I was singing in a contest once and we were told we could not use our own discs.......seems to be a big thing around here lately......anyway of course we were told that the KJ had them all.....well I wanted "I Ain't Never" by Web Pierce......and they didn't have it.....but I did.....after some intense discussion I was allowed to use my disc....and won 3rd place.....I think if a disc is in good condition a singer should be able to use their own....but I'm told it's not fair to those singers who don't have their own discs.....dah......go buy some......

[font=Verdana]How about this song? "Insensitive" Jann Arden.
I really like that song, and sing it at karaoke, but I can't seem to find it on the web. A couple of sites have told me that it is too old... isn't it like from the 80's? I'm only 20, but suddenly I'm beginning to feel like I'm over the hill!

It's on Ameri-Sing AMS-1508 also.  I've practiced it but never done it in public, so as far as I know you're still the only one who has.

I totally agree with you that a lot of songs get overlooked. I personally love the band The Cult, but I have only seen one sub on here of theirs (thanks xxKevinxx  :D  ) I wish people would wander off the path more instead of insisting on subbing the same song 5 times in 2 weeks...

there's one song by Elvis, "Where Do You Come From," -  The women really love it and they are always coming up and asking me who sang it.

I so agree with fierynette - there are so many good songs out there, but I keep hearing the same one's over and over again. I'm on strike with "Crazy" and "Unchained Melody" - it will be wayyy too soon if I ever hear either of those again...LOL. I go out of my way to find unusual songs to sing, because I know how bored I get hearing the same stuff redone a zillion times. I'm to the point that if someone at Singers Showcase subs a song within a day or so of someone else I don't listen to the second one, the exception being Christmas where there are only so many songs. Just my views...

AMEN and HALLELUJAH Drea!!  If I never hear Crazyyyyyyy one more time in my entire lifetime I'll be one of the happiest campers in the whole world lol.  While I'm sure there are some folks who sing it really well I've heard it slaughtered 15 billion gazillion times and there's just so much a gal can take after all lol.  Keep on bringin' em on gurl, love the way you do what you do!!!

I totally agree!!!  Hearing CRAZY over and over again is enough to make one CRAZY...

Lisa, I have a few Cult tunes I have been waiting to sub...

Please add MY WAY to the list of overplayed and a couple of Elvis tunes
DON'T KNOW WHY is another tune that got oversung..too bad cause I used to like it..
LANDSLIDE is another
FRIENDS IN LOW PLACES
SWEET CHILD OF MINE
ALL LYNARD SKYNARD.......just to name a few

There are only over 250,000 plus songs out there

One of the things that has always confused me is how the companies that produce the songs decide what they are going to record.  Yes, there are some no-brainers but on one hand I see what I consider to be some pretty unusual stuff and then on the other hand I have trouble finding some songs that I think are way more popular.

Back in the 60's Gary Lewis and the Playboys put out some very good songs.  But no one has heard them since.  I've got very good versions of "Sure Gonna Miss Her" and "Everybody Loves a Clown" and they weren't difficult to find.  They are great songs and I do them all of the time.  I've never heard anyone else do them.

It's that way with certain artists too.  I can't find anything by the BoDeans except for Closer to Free and that is a long way from their best song.

Bare Naked Ladies is another band that seems very unrepresented in cdg.  I did finally find "If I Had $1,000,000" but it took awhile to get that.

Then there is the issue of those songs that are out there everywhere but no one sings.  I hear Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" every night and once in awhile "Cocaine" but that's it.

I think everybody has a fairly large number of Beatles songs in their collections.  But I rarely hear anyone sing them.

I try to sing good songs that aren't heard very often.  If I'm in a country music mood I'll do "Six Days on the Road", "Movin' On", and "Oh Lonesome Me".  All of them are good and I've never heard anyone else do them.

Anything by Muddy Waters is almost never done by ANYONE ('cept me of course!)

--Mannish Boy ( I sing this every time I go out singing and have subbed it to SS)
--Hoochie Coochie man
--Got my mogo workin'

Also anything by any of the old classic blues men---Howlin Wolf, Robert Johnson, Albert King, Albert Collins

No one sings Allman Brothers---I sang Whippin' Post and Statesboro Blues last night for the first time in along time(had gotten rusty on them!)

Lots of people sing Stevie Ray Vaughn--Pride and Joy, Look at Little Sister.
