Are you using home theater speakers with your karaoke machine?  If so, have you had any problems?  What about microphone feedback?

Thx!

HT speakers aren't designed to handle live vocals, they will work, however they won't sound good on the vocal part & will need to be eq'd in such a way that it's possible you can blow them if turned up.

Thx Lonman.  I guess I'll go with some dedicated speakers!

Lonman, I never gave this thought, but I have both a decent DTS surround system, and PA in my living room.. Is there any advantage to running the backing into the surround system, and using the PA for my vocals ?  or is that pointless ?   The PA speakers are placed around my rear surround sound systems speakers, so there wouldn't be too much separation based upon speaker proximity (I don't think). The speakers are JBL monitor type speakers 12 inch 3-way...handles pretty high output... PA speakers are 15 inch 3-way... Just wondering if sound-wise there'd be any advantage to hi fi speakers handling the backing music... or is the PA more like live band sound even for the backing in Karaoke ?

Honestly home recievers aren't as good to push the live vocals either, but they will suffice provided the speakers can handle it.  I personally wouldn't bother with the surround sound engaged, although it can provide a cool effect - if they are turned down to were you JUST hear them you may not have a problem, the surround speakers are generally voiced the same as typical home theater speakers & just as vunerable to blowing just like the mains.  No point in getting a separate set of "karaoke" speakers for the surround side.

You won't hurt the surround speakers/receiver amp unless you drive them off a pro mixer line level out at high levels with the music playback....A mixer can overdrive the receiver and end up damaging the speakers. You can connect your CD+G player directly to your home theater surround system and it will be just fine cause the CD outputs @ consumer levels, same as the home theater stuff..

One good thing about just vocals thru the PA, is better definition. They really stand out from the music even at same SPL's. I know one KJ who runs two sets of tops just for that reason...One pair is vocals only.

I bet you discovered that already whenever your band ran only vocals thru the PA and backlined everything else in smaller clubs. In fact, you don't need a mixer for your PA if it's just one or two mics and you have a single or dual mic pre amp. You can patch that straight into your PA amp with no mixer required.

We used the Altec VOT PA bins....depending on venue size, a few bins to bin stacks...Guitar amps were Marshall; Bass was Ampeg classic 8x10 SVT, Also used a Sunn Coliseum 800 at times, 2x15 Electrovoice SRO's in folded horn type reflex cab (I think that's what it was)...Mic'd the drums, and of course everything bled into the PA... Yet the Amp's took care of the instrumentals in small/medium sized venues,  Everything seems to go thru the PA though at high volumes of course... So not sure LOL
