Here's a simple little topic that may have been covered before. All types of music seem to have at least one redeaming quality. But, if you could banish one style of music from the airwaves what would it be? What don't you like about it?

Rap! I don't mind the music beats & the singers that do it definitely a talented in the respect that they can do it - I couldn't touch it, I don't care for the lyric content 98% of the time F this F that and other condescending lyrics towards just about anything. Although I don't care for the lyric content in the alot of the hard rock scene either - even though that's what I enjoy musically.

Although there is plenty of "trance" and Ambience that freaks me out. At times listening to the droning sounds of some of that is just plain scary. Certain styles and compositions feel like I'm getting launched into a "bad trip".. produces ALOT of discomfort for me.I'm starting to enjoy some of the bizarre techno-funk styles such as "acid Jazz" yet I don't listen to it much, and I've always liked New Age.... Yet honestly, Trance and Ambience styles might be higher on the dislike list than Rap.. I try to be as open minded as I can be, yet certain types of Music AND Modern Art (if that's what you'd call it), some of the mural's and linear designs are pretty dizzying to look at, while I never puked at a bar, I did puke on the ramp of the Guggenheim Museum in NYC when I was young....Some of that (art?) stuff really did make me sick, some of it's just wild...Like a guy sitting in a cramped box all scrunched up ? I don't call that art, and quite honestly, how anyone could consider some of the disgusting Flower vases Maplethorpe thought up as Art...well, I won't go there.. SICK,.. Yet like music, ALL this aesthetic stuff is subjective..So who am I to say ?. I don't know what constitute's "art" anymore....Likewise, I'm not sure all types of music can be appreciated by all people. Not sure how honest a person is if they say, "I like all music", and like Lonman said, there's some pretty nasty (supposed) music out there that goes by the guise of "Hard Rock" ? Well, I never did take to KORN, and some of the worse stuff.. While I like alot of Indie, and Alternative Styles, there's plenty I don't understand (probably the kindest most PC way to phrase that). I have to be honest, there's plenty of Western music styles I don't appreciate...I won't "dis" it, because I haven't habituated or acclimated to it, yet it's "different" to me. To be honest, I couldn't tell you exactly what constitutes "Grunge" either. I'm familiar with alot of the 90's style, yet as to whether it's a specific genre, or a "time" during which a few bands in the Seattle area released a newer style of Alternative, I'm not sure....Just don't know...Has alot to do with my age and geographic location I suppose....
OK, I shouldn't be this opinionated I suppose, I'm somewhat human like everyone else...Just the way thing's are...We can't get along with everything, there's ALOT of contrasting styles... Tough to like it all in an area of aesthetics..

I agree with you Lonman. The lyrics in rap, hip-hop, and hard rock is the thing I can't get past a lot of the time. The negative, mean-spirited, darkside vibe bothers
me. Plus melody and chord structure is often non-existent. But I'll contradict myself
because I really liked old Public Enemy stuff like Fight The Power in Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing". The message there rang true. I can't believe I'm criticizing modern day music in the same way my favorites from the '60s and '70s were once criticized! I must be getting too old. LOL

So as I'm humming a Rage Against the Machine tune, I'm typing in that Musicals has got to go. Grease and Chicago are the epitome of making me head for the restroom at that time. Aside from Avenue Q and the upcoming Wedding Singer musical, the rest of Broadway go

Not sure about banning a music genre... but ......
I find rap.. vulgar, violent and repetitious.. both in lyric and beat.... and it seems to go on and on and on.... I truly despise anything that becomes excessively redundant, regardless of genre. However, some of these rappers CAN put on quite a performance... and do have some talent. Guess I just can't "get into it".
I am not big into today's Heavy Metal stuff either, for some of the same reasons.... violence and shock value.... but mostly because the music is just waaaaay too loud, in general it is frighteningly "dark", ya can't hear the vocals... and if ya can all it is .... is SCREAMING for the most part. I'm sure some of these musicians ARE talented.. but it gets lost in the 'chaos' of their music.
I tend to prefer melodic music, with identifiable lyrics.

I'm with you guys on the whole rap thing. I do enjoy some main stream
rap, but most of it is worthless. I just don't understand why it is still going so strongly.
I can't wait until the trend is over.
I don't care for a lot of heavy metal either. Screaming is not singing to me. I love a good power ballid and some of the songs, but mostly don't care for it.
I don't think there is any genre I'd completely get rid of.

i'm in the minority here i guess. i don't like the lyrics of the hardcore rap, but you can't help but "nod ya' head" when the beat hits. plus the ladies like to "bounce" to it. as for the music i can't stand it would HAVE to be opera. it's like fingernails ona chalkboard!
i absolutely love the music they call soundscapes. oh, and classical. anything with no lyrics is fine by me. i guess that's kinda funny me being a KJ and all?

Least favorite style? Rap...although I do like A FEW
To me, if it's good music, it's good music. I don't eliminate anything until I've heard it.

Here's another vote for RAP
Though, Opera & most forms of Classical would run a reallllllyyyyy close 2nd & 3rd.

Rap, and Hip-Hop....... But then again I don't consider it music anyhow. It's more like the old Coffee shops that had the poetry readings, but with a bass and drums added in!!!!!!

I found this interesting, if for no other reason than I'd like to have some knowledge of a style I can't stand. At least this way it's tougher for the opposition to say, "You hasn't a clue that which you be dissin YO"

Although the lyrics are often distasteful, I think rap is much better to listen to than classical. The latter is, I assume, an acquired taste. I just never acquired it. I like rap about as much as I like country, which is not much. Showtunes aren't too bad.

My personal opinion:
if the artist can't READ music.... they should be banished!
Even if some music isn't my taste or style.... I can always appreciate their talent and the artistry. BUT if there's just some bubble-gum pop princess up there shakin' her booty and makin' orgasmic sounds into a microphone...... it hurts to listen to it!
example..... Foo Fighters..... i SOOOO do not listen to anything resembling their music.... but that lead singer dude (I don't even know his name) KNOWS his music and he impresses the hell outta me...
Christina Aguilera..... don't listen to her kind of music either.... and I don't particularily like her style, but HOLY CRAP what a voice on that girl!
Brittany, however.... and Ashlee Simpson...... I just don't get it

Rap/Hip-hop can be good if it has a strong dance groove and isnt filled with repulsive language. Dance music is dance music. Waht is INTOLERABLE is GANGSTA THUG hard rap, stuff like Insane Clown Posse, and any one of the others that are simply UNLISTNEABLE and just so PATENTLY OFFENSIVE that there really is no redeeming value at all. Now what do I consider "Good" rap, most old-school rap(Boogie down productions, Public Enemy, NWA, KRS-1, Grandmaster, LLCoolJ, Digital Underground, Salt & Peppa, Digable Planets, Me Myself and I, Run DMC} stuff taht was commercially palatable, had a good dance groove and wasnt pattently offensive. As to present day---Usher dance songs are good, In Da Club, Yeah, Black Eyed Peas, Tupac, certain Snoop-Dog/Dr. Dre cuts---again anything with a good dance groove to it. Of late I've developed a interest in REGGAETON--Latin Hip-hop.
Not much for CW music. Just never grew up with it. Dont listen to classical. Cant tolerate Techno, Acid, Trance or most of the gutteral Thrash Rock. Never really devloped much of a taste for HARD ROCK or Speed Metal. But most of the time when I listen to the radio or CD player its jazz or blues. Also have started listening to alot of Salsa dance music.
