Hi Guyz I'm knew to all this
Need advice on what player to get - reliable and fairly priced
I realise that dvd karaoke are now readily available and would therefore buy a one that plays these disks
My shortlist is

jvc sv22 or 222 bk or blk BUT does this play DVD karaoke
Alba roadstar 2551 - states it plays the lot
ultimate 1  -  states it plays the lot

Any other suggestions gratefully receivd

The machine will add in to my hifi rack system into an av amp which takes digital or analogue - component svhs or composite video

The JVC SV-22 doesn't play DVD's.  It will play VCD's though.
I'm not sure what kind of money you were thinking of spending, but you might want to check our the RSQ NEO-E500 Karaoke Player.  It covers DVD plus all the other formats and is comparable in quality to JVC.

I would recommend against the NEO. I've heard of at least ONE complaint.

I have a RSQ505, and they're just FINE for a dvd/cdg combination. Never had a bit of trouble from mine.
