Does anyone who's studied the evolution of singing have any idea if rasp, and gravel in Western singing came about from the "Delta Blues" period of music ? Prior to blues styles, were singing styles in the Western world very clean ?

There used to be a saying to sound country you got to sound like you have smoked 3 packs of cigs a day for twenty years and drove all day to get there with a hangover.. There might be more truth in that than not..
Here are a couple of classic country sounds
 Rodgers

Acuff

These werent the real raspers like Ritter or Tubbs although that sort of the normal style in those days pre Delta Blues  BTW Acuff had several degrees in music and alot of the credits on karaoke cd's are Acuff Rose Productions  Yet I have only found 3 of his songs on karaoke  Wabash Cannon Ball   Great Speckled Bird  and Wreck On The Highway....

Here is a test you can take...here

Thanks Karyoker, I made an absurd assumption.  I made the assumption (not knowing my history) that the Delta Blues LONG preceded around 1900.  I was WAY WAY off... LOL ..

I never took into consideration "Spiritual" came LONG prior to that, and alot of spiritual also had the style I was questioning.

Would Roy Acuff have been pre-Delta however ?  He was born in the 1900's ?  Not sure EXACTLY when the Delta Blues period was. FOr some reason I assumed it went WAY WAY back, to when african blues first made it's way to the US
