OK, here's a touchy issue, perhaps.  Have you ever given a somewhat negative
song comment to somebody that you know on Singer's Showcase?  Are comments meant to be taken seriously?  I'm just curious.

It all depends on the Person, and how sensitive they are. There are people that feel insulted if they aren't praised.  I don't comment if I don't have something positive to say. Because I felt as if I had stepped over the line once at what I thought was an honest opinion.

Don, here's a hint.... THe word "Critique" over there is a joke,  most don't know what it means... They think it means, throw a boquet of roses at me.... The term and "C" category has no place there...It's just fictitious..... There are three categories

1) listen and don't comment
2) listen and say hello
3) listen or don't listen, and write a dissertation on how great I am

I learned this early,  those that say they genuinely want a critique, and can handle the truth, get one via Email....after a year of being here, I've met perhaps 4 that genuinely can handle a critique, and considering the time a critique takes to think up and present, the CONSTRUCTIVE truth is the honor, it's not blasting someone !

They have it butt-backwards here,  most think that if you send them 88's because it's quick, and beget's favorable comments on your own submissions, it's the "way to go here"...I'd never participate in such BS...It's counterproductive, and such behaviour is why many get blasted in the real world by the likes of a "simon"

The rating system here consists of 8-10+++++++++++
(and if you give that 11th star, NEVER EVER give one less again)

Problem is people get greedy, the get accustomed to praise,  perhaps if we started with newbies by being honest, and VERY reserved with who gets the 9 or 10. Things might be easier for genuine rating.   Wouldn't it be nice if someone could allow themselves to be a prototype in here, of what a REAL rating system is ?.... ranks of 3-7.. Maybe I will sub !!!!! Heck, I'd be insulted and start writing nasty stuff to people that gave me the sarcastic 9 or 10 !

Someone should start a new fad in SS.... HONEST feedback !  We need a role model !  or a sacrificial lamb of sorts. someone who know's they aren't good, and can deal with average ranks....

Steve,
I guess what you are saying, is kinda like when a Wife asks you how this new dress looks on her? It took me 4 Wives to figure that one out!!!!

I imagine this topic has been covered a lot in the past.  I just hadn't come across it lately.  I'm just curious if comments given and received are meant to be taken seriously.

Ohhhh, man, are we starting THIS again??  I thought the last time we talked about it the bloody pulp of the horse was beaten so badly that it wouldn't be back for awhile...

But, to answer the original question, in my opinion the answer is no.  There are a few here who will give an honest opinion and get crucified for it, but for the most part I would say that the Critique category is not to be taken seriously.  That is not to say that you can't learn and grow from what people DO say, however.  This is a really great place to hang out, it's just that if you are looking for an honest critique of your work (operative word being honest) it is most likely not going to happen.  The email route is probably your best bet if you are truly looking to learn and improve on what you are putting out there.

I do submit, I do comment, and I do listen to a lot of subs out there.  I happen to enjoy listening to people's subs just for the sheer sake of listening.  I just don't make it a habit to post negative comments because like I said,  I've seen what happens when people do and the singer was not expecting it.  If I don't have anything nice to say, I just don't say anything at all...oh, and I also don't rank.  Counterproductive?  Maybe, if you are truly out there to improve.  Fun?  Yes!

Oh well, just my two cents...

ROFLAO Dr. D...    Sorry, what you say isn't funny in actuality, yet it's true !

Here's some advice,  wait til the honeymoon wears off with the 4th wife, She won't want to hear how the dress really looks either !

Charmin,  I ALWAY'S want the truth (assuming it's not camouflaged bashing which at times it is in such venues). Do I always LIKE the truth ?  HELL no.. Yet hanging onto my ego WILL NEVER enable me to grow as a musician... Additionally, someone giving me an honest 4, doesn't mean they don't like me !!!  People forget this ! Someone can like me alot, and tell me how much I suck at something. This is valuable of course if they are skilled in the area, and what they are doing is helping me in time improve !  I've been trashed by fellow musicians and best friends..... Of course in the privacy of my own studio...LOL,  yet they were correct...."I couldn't play the style, and I sounded rigid, and obviously hadn't worked on anything in years"......  "Steve, if that's what you sound like now, stick to bass, let David play the piano parts"...

5 years into number 5, and that size 5 is now a size 20. Me critique?,  I don't have another house to give away.

on another note,
As a musician myself, I hear all the notes I hit, and rarely Do I ever consider my performances Great. But the Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So as long as people Like hearing my music, I will keep playing mistakes and all.

LOL    Dr. D.    WOW

Yeah,  if I suck, and someone REALLY believes my performance was a 10.... That's one thing,  I'm talking about the person who says to themselves, and others....

"X really is pathetic, but he/she is a nice person and who am I to critique them even though they say they want honest criticism..Let someone else be "the heavy" and tell them how they can improve, let someone else tell them how coaching can perhaps benefit them, I don't have the time or interest in hurting anyone...I'll give them straight 10's and go with path of least resistence"

Assuming "X" really wants to grow, X is being lied to...To me this is sad...Regardless of how few ""X"s really exist....Yet if this is the way things are, sobeit

It just got to a point where you couldn't tell the difference in fact or fiction in the comments you get.

Exactly, with such drastically inconsistent comments from semi-truthful to blatant lying... What can we possibly learn in such a setting ?  Not to mention, KNOWING how to give feedback and critique is a skill within itself FEW HERE HAVE.... Point being "C" should be comments, and not critique here....the word has no place...

Agreed Charmin...

(oh yeah,  I'm done with the critique discussion LMAO )  won't feed into it anymore

Don,  yep...this has become the sore thumb of the KS chatter, not YOUR inquiry, but the constant debating knowing nothing ever changes

Steven

All valid points..

(Other shoe) But, as a social animal, we all desire praise and acceptance..

Those too stupid or perverted to be aware of this, will allways knock the singer, no matter how good he or she is..

I have given good reviews to a select few here.. Not because they were great/good, but because I knew them and had heard them sing in person. (A few exceptions)

So even tho the mp3 may have been a bit "off" I knew the ability the individual had/has.

It seems cruel to knock someone just to knock them.. I've found over the years, most who do that, have low self esteme and are trying to elevate themselves up in the eyes of others..
A false premise at best..

As for me, I have fun up there.. That's enough.. But some say I'm ok, so that's just iceing on the cake..  :hi5:

If you get over here, I'm buyin'.

My husband and I have a code for song comments for each other.  If we did a good job we tell each other they sucked...if we didn't do well we tell each other that it was very good...We don't get into details......
