Most of my regulars now just tell me what songs they want to sing.. I am dying for Frank (Roxbox) to come out with singer multiple entries which will be auto entered into each singers que...It took every ounce of disicpline to go by the computer rotation and not by the slips but I am used to that now.. At last nights gig some strangers showed up and started turning in slips..They were annoying... just tell me wat u want to sing
You dont have any mumbers in your book!!!Just tell me wat u want to sing
Am I the only one trying to get away from books and the old ways?

From a customer standpoint, how do people know what you have if you have no books? Do you have every karaoke song? I like to go to other shows and browse the books for something new and often I will see a song that I never would have thought of.
Then, as a KJ, I'm gonna have to say that you must not be very busy at your shows. With slips, I can handle requests from 5 people at once. You can't. And I also run a computer system that will allow me to search songs just by typing in a part of the title or artist name. It's just much easier to take the slips and then queue the songs after the customer walks away.

As a customer I prefer to look through a book at my table at my own pace - don't want to have to wait my turn at a kiosk, or have to keep asking the host if you have a song. I could see it getting cumbersome for the host if people keep on asking if you have a song - you have to look it up & hope it's there.

hard enough sometimes to deal with one or two folks that refuse to look anything up in the books, and expect you to have every single song memorized.... I couldnt imagine trying to handle all of the requests that way. maybe its just me, but that would seem to need an extra person to be there just to handle song requests.
Most only turn in one song at a time, but for the ones that turn in multiples, we just tell them that we are gonna spread them out and mix them up with other requests.
Of course, at some of the private parties lately, sometimes spreading them out was easy to do with just 3-4 main singers. Those few loved the last party, as they admitted at the end of the party they got to sing more that night than they usually do at 2-3 nights where they usually karaoke.
Something else we have tried a few times was to ask folks to write down a song if we DIDNT have it in our book, so that we could try and get it for them next time.

No Books?
I think your computer system is great, but I have to agree with the others.
I think you need to have at least 1 or 2 books for people to look through.
I too like to browse the selection to figure out what I want to sing.
Slips only bother me when they hand in 20 of them and sing once.
Do you make your own slips?
I would suggest making slips with spaces for multiple entrees instead of 1 slip for 1 song.
I think we will always have to deal withe books being a burdon, but I love your idea of trying to eliminate them!

Oh I got books but im current thru 05 some 06 dont need numbers...And still take requests but now instead of having 40 request slips to keep track of everybody i just have a few Most of them have 3-5 songs on them and they are not bugging as you think. The goal is to establish a rotation with people not turning in slips all the time believe me Im spending less time with taking requests than the old way.. And looking for ways to streamline more. Karaoke isnt dying it's changing ......

I like having books. And i made my song slips big enough to have more than 7 songs put on them. They fit my peg board nicely. When someone is getting to their last song...i go ask them...if you want more...fill out another slip....Works good for us.

The new S&D is going to have the multiple entry for each singer, along with a load of other new things.
As far as Book and Slips...I make people uses them, it is a lot less confusing than having 10 people standing around me and asking all sorts of questions.
As far as singers that turn in multiple slips, I kindy as them to write on the back of the slips too, can fit at least 10 more songs there.

Have to agree books are useful. Although it would be nice to be able to figure out what I want a key into a kiosk somewhere -- that would seem more expensive for KJ -- but I'm just as happy handing the slip to the KJ.
10 songs!?!? Geez, in most places I go, I'm lucky if I get 2 songs in a night - of course I usually go on weekends when every wanna-be, party person is out.
During the week is seems a bit better-- btw-- why do most bars start karaoke at 9P or later on weekdays? seems like 7 or 8 would work much better during the week.

Im reged with S&D and Roxbox both and will checking them both out, but if its set up right the singer history the next week will reflect the multiple entries from the week before...And will show the songs they sang or didnt... Then the option is there to keep on with the multiples...
And I can see another addition If a singer requests a song not in the selection it can be entered too.. That way when you get it there is a reminder right there in their history.......

The new S&D app is in testing phases right now, not sure when the "official" release date will be.
10 Songs....Yep, come to my reg Thrs nite show, usually not more than 5 singers this time of year. But it is starting to pick up a lil bit.

My place starts at 8pm every night of the week....I don't like starting at 9...Too me that is too late to get started...

Weeknights our crowds usually shuffle in about 10 or later. There were a couple of places that started earlier, they no longer do because they got no crowd until after 9.

I'm a songbook guy... I've always loved the feel of looking through a book, and maybe the off chance I'll see a name that will inspire me to try something other than the stuff I've run into the ground. The funny thing is I've sang thousands of songs since I started in karaoke, and I STILL stick to sixty or so songs for an all the time kinda thing.

I hate it when a show does not start till 9 on the weeknights, or the weekends for that matter. Some people have to work the next morning.
I use song books still, and also use the computer........ I use KJ pro for the books and run KJ pro at the show so that if somebody comes up and asks for a song or artist, etc.... i can find it easier... back when i have like 1,500 songs i could remember, but now that i have almost tripled that i can't remember, and my old age (28) isn't helping.
I do prefer sing one bring one, but also welcome getting a few (no more than 4) slips. I actually keep people's slips in a card file, that way they don't waste paper filling in slips. Some singers even refuse to look at their slips and "just pick something" and hand them back
I am looking into converting over to S&D at some point in time

I use index cards for my regulars to keep their songs for them. I do
agree if you keep song lists for people they do tend to bother you more.
They ask to see their list and stand there humming and hawing about what song to
sing when your trying to work. But for the most part the lists make my life easier.
I pick most of the regulars songs for them from their lists. I think they like not having to think to much when they are partying.

As a singer I like having a book. I don't want to go to a kiosk or ask the KJ about a song. I like to browse and, like others, will sometimes find something new to try...
We have books for our singers, Artist & Song title. We don't do anything on computer although I think the computer rotation showing who is up next would be neat (we do announce who is on deck and who is in the hole)...
We make our own song slips and several of our singers will turn in multiple slips at one time; sometimes they come up and re-arrange the order and that's fine. When they turn in multiple slips we keep them in the order they were turned in. With this method we, and the singer, never have to worry about getting a song up in time for their spot in the rotation.
We also have people who turn in one slip at a time. This is fine too. They tend to be a bit more studious with with books and may be making their selection based on what else is being sung and what the mood of the room is.
We also get people who want us to look up their song and fill out their slip or just walk up and say "I'm ___ and I want to sing ____" Neither of these are methods we use... If you want to sing, please fill out a song slip.
karayoker, I'm not sure where you find time to talk to each singer and look up their songs! Of course we still use discs so we have to re-file them. Do the singers understand not to try to speak with you at the beginning of a song when you are adjusting for the singer or know to stop talking before a song ends so you can puff up the singer and make your announcements? Some people have even tried to talk with us while we're announcing! Granted, this is rare but does happen... Also, is your area away from the singer? Ours is close to the singer so the KJ kind of has to walk away to have much of a conversation with someone without disturbing the current singer...
At one gig we also had index cards, the singer would pull his/her card and either fill out their request slips from there or just hand over the card and tell us to start with song #1. This was okay but I personally wished they would sing something other than the same songs.... Of course that was their choice and many chose the comfort zone.
Ramble over,
Susie
