for home use I suggest getting the Karawin player- hey flip thought I was gonna suggest RoxBox. not in this case. why suggest a professional solution for home use?
I will suggest for importing to get the KJRip N zip as it does a great job in importing.
It's free and has it's own database to name the songs.

No need to buy any expensive software, or hardware, as long as your CD drive in the computer is CDG (karaoke) compatiable.

Audiograbber....ripping
CDRWIN....ripping
MP3+G toolz....BIN converter & naming
Winamp & Mp3+G plugin to karaoke tracks

Thoes are a few programs that will allow you to get you karaoke tracks on the computer, there are more out there too.

For hooking your computer to your TV, it depends on what type of extra outputs for video you have on your computer.

the lap top has has a headphone jack for audio and a nornal 15 pin output jack - the kind you would use to hook it up to an external monitor - so - is there any special adapter or cables i would need for the audio and tv??
also I dont think the drive in the laptop is CDG compatable - My desktop has a Plextor which I know will work so i guess I could move all the songs over to the laptop if i needed to

thanks..

any one of the above mentioned products will work just fine. I will add one to the mix: MTU has a scaled down version of their Pro software called Hoster Lite.

For home use all will work well. I do agree if it is just for home use take the cheaper route as long as it has the features you are looking for. Try the demo versions from several and take the test drive so to speak. It will become apparent which one you want.

As for Video connections....does your laptop have a S-Video out? and does it have a dual screen mode?

right click on your desktop, when the dialog box comes up look at the top and click on settings tab. If you have dual screen capability you will see a #1 and #2 screen designation there and the ablility to switch between them. If not then it may be very difficult to use the laptop for home karaoke. You may be better using the PC with the plextor on it and installing a good graphics card w/dual screen capability.

hope this helps .....let us know if you have dual screen on the laptop. The conneciton to the TV is a snap if you do.

By the way Danny   good job dude!

Actually I am going to retract the karawin and suggest the karafun player instead as it is a free player.
you can get it here: www.karafun.com

I'm just getting back to this. I have ripped several songs to my laptop using Audiograbber. I downloaded Karafun but when I look in the folder I put the CDG songs nothing is there to play. did I miss a step???

Just went thru this scenario this last week. Luckily his desktop with the plextor had an ethernet card in it so I got a cat5 crosswired cable.  With Kjamp  Rip-n-Zip he is ripping directly from the plextor to a shared folder on the laptop. Actually with this setup you can play music off of either one The other night I was using the laptop for karaoke and getting the music wireless lan from the system computer.
If you do have 2 displays in display properties there should be a 4 pin s-video out on the laptop.  Some of the newer ones like my presario has a 7 pin but the 4 pin s-video cable works...
