they're used for special features for your membership... buying things at the point bank, colors, fonts, name changes, etc.
You're given points for every post, every thread you create, etc.
geve you some to play with it!

I went to the forum shop to buy some stuff, but couldn't, I didn't have the points. There's an option there to buy a real lap-dance from your favourite Karaoke Forum Member if you have enough points.
