Thanks for all the help on the multiplex CD's.  Now, I have a different problem. I have discovered I am a bass voice.  I try to pitch my voice to the tenor lead singers and I get a sore throat.  My player does not have the ability to change keys.  Is there any way to overcome this?  I am comfortable in the key of F or G.  Can a person order their favorite songs in the key that suits their voice?

Thanks

What player did you end up buying?

Yep, it's called an external key-changer. Here's an example of one
AKM706

Nope, not really. The CDG manus (mostly) record and sell the trax in the original key.

You stated originally you only wanted to spend $50 for a player to do everything - didn't you find one?  Most karaoke players have a built in key changer, the ones that don't have one, you need to spend MORE money to get an external key changer.  Sometimes these cost more than a decent karaoke player by themselves!  Allstar gave you a good link with most of the externals available.

You can order something like MTU MicroStudio for the computer - provided you have a cdg capable cdr in your computer, you can take the time to edit the music yourself with the correct key.  www.mtu.com

Yes, I bought a memorex player for $38.00 at Walmart.

Works great for me.  Nice large lryic letters on the TV screen, nice sound, good mike volume so I can hear myself over the music, music plays thru the TV speaker, and has a cassette recorder.  I am liking it much.  I have given up on finding multiplex CD's.  But I did find a CD with five songs.  The first five have the lead singer, then the second five are the same songs without the lead singer.  So I can train with the singer, then I can branch out on the songs without the lead singer and try it on my own.  It is working good.  I am getting the hang of it.  But I cannot afford to get a key changer to bring that tenor voice and music down into my range, at least not yet for a while until Xmas comes around again.

I don't understand what that advice was all about using the PC to change the key.  I have a PC, but it sounds like a lot of work to change it using software and a PC, is it?

I will never go out and try karaoke anywhere like a bar, I just want to see if I can do it.
I am interested in c/w music only.  It is fun and I like it.  Sure wish I was born with a higher voice for this.

Think about a barbershop quartet.......... the 1st 3rd, anad 5th harmonies. you dont have to sing in the key to sound right, just a harmonic of the root.

Yes, you would have to purchase software to convert your karaoke tracks on the CDG to use on the computer.  But you don't have to buy expensive software to do it.  if you are interested you can find more info here...
http://www.karaokeplayground.co.uk/

Once you get the tracks converted to the MP3+G format on the computer, you can play them with WINAMP for free, and change keys with the PACEMAKER plugin for free.

You may want to try singing karaoke using MIDI tracks.  With MIDI you not only can change key, you can mute or change the level of any instrument you want. You can change the tempo too. And those tracks are mostly free on the net .  Here is a link
to get you started  http://www.vanbasco.com/

Good luck

Then you have a defective player.  This has been a common myth since the advent of digital key changers - the ley is changed so it must be slower (or faster) because that's what we are used to with analog key/tempo changers.
A digital key changer does not alter the tempo.

Hi Lonman,

I am just about to give up and return the player to Walmart.  It is just getting too hard on my voice trying to sing along with the tenor voice on the CD.  So this is my last ditch effort before I go thru with it.

I went to mtu.com, saw the keyrite software, downloaded the demonstration, but can't get it to play.  But that is just my inability to use my PC correctly and can be remedied.

But I want to ask you, have you ever tried the keyrite software to change key?  Did it work well?

Now, assuming it does, and you get the key changed, can you then burn that newly "key changed" karaoke song to a CD, and then will that new CD be like a regular karaoke CD with "on TV screen" lyrics?  Or will it end up just being a regular music CD with the key changed?

I need the newly burned CD to be just like the regular karaoke CD that I bought at the store, except that the key will be changed for my voice ability.

Thanks, slowstick

Go give it back to WalMart and get your money back. Have a look at Mixsonic MS-989 DVD/VCD/CDG Karaoke Player from www.acekaraoke.com (one of the site sponsors) for $89.00.
I am not saying it is the best player on the market, but we are looking at a budget item for you. Here are some features.
Built in Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoder for surround sound.
Dolby Digital/DTS Digital Out
Supports DVD/CD/MP3/JPEG/CDG/VCD/SVCD/CD-R/DTS-CD/WMA/
Full Function Remote Control
2 Microphone Inputs
16 Steps Key Control
Echo Control
5.1 Analog Out
Coaxial Digital Out
S-Video Out
Progressive Scan / Component Video Output
NTSC / PAL Compatible
All Regions / Zone Free / Region Free

If you buy this machine, you have no need to fiddle with computers/software and other things since you only want to use it at home. Also keep in mind that once you start with the computer, you need software, a specific cdr/w and after all, still a karaoke player, unless you want to move your computer to the living room where you want to sing. Think through what your needs are, add up the cost and make a well calculated decision.

slowstick wrote:

I have it at home, and it works very well.

slowstick wrote:

Yes, most certainly. I do it with my custom CD's. Change the key, re-burn them and take them when we go out to do karaoke.

Nope.

That's what you'll get

In order  to use the keyrite software, you would have to rip the song to a microstudio file using microstudio, then change the key, then rewrite the cdg to disk. It is a bit much just to change a key. My suggestion would be to get a real real karaoke home machine with a keychanger built in. they can be had at various websites for about 1-200 bucks. that is the best bet for a beginner.

Key right doesn't work by itself, you need MTU Microstudio to do the actually editing & then yes you can burn the disc with the key changed to fit your need.  But again, it is alot more involved.  But again, remember in order to burn a "CDG", you need a cdr that is compatible.  The majority of burners in the computers are not.
Best bet is to get an actual karaoke player, you may have to go over your budget.  The player Allstar mentioned might do the trick for you, i've never seen it in action & haven't heard anything as far as reliability so don't know about that.

An alternative to that is machine from RSQ on ebay. It's $99 with free shipping. I would think for $10 more RSQ would be a better machine to buy.
