Post subject: | Need some help with Karaoke system! |
Hello everyone, I am new on this forum and this is my first post. Well I need some help. I was recently at someone's house where they had a karaoke DVD that had like 1000 songs on it! The lyrics would light up a different color when you needed to sing etc... Well I was totally amazed. So here is my question. Could someone pelase explain the point of getting a "system"? Can;t one just get a DVD that has songs and video etc... and just connect a mic? What is the benefit of having a machine? Also what exactly is CD+G? Is it possible to make any song a "karoke song"? By adding lyrics and some background video? I really need someone to explain the basics please. I just built a home theater in my house, but have an old Onkyo amp powering it which is decent, but no mic inputs... My front speakers are JBL S38. I also have a 92" projector screen which is amazing so if I can sort this karaoke stuff thing out I will be extremely happy and would provide awesome entertainment for guests, etc... My budget is around $300-$400 including mic. But I would appreciate some help. I also have an extra laptop available and would consider buying software even if it is really expensive if I can turn my laptop into a karaoke machine as I see some of you people did. So anyway can you guys please explain the basics. What's the point if one can just buy a DVD full of songs and will just need a DVD player. Thanks everyone so much for your help. |

comon guys I know someone could explain this stuff to me. Please... I spent all night searching and here is what I found: I am leaning towards this mic Shure PGX24/SM58. It is the Shure SM58 wireless mic. I guess I will only get one mic for now. But now I need some help. What kind of equipment will I need in order to be able to connect this to an RCA input in the back of my reciever? Remember I will start off with a Karaoke DVD that I got so I need to be able to see the video and hear the audio from the DVD player along with the mic audio... I am also using digital optical out form m DVD player into my reciever since this is a home theater... so what can you guys suggest and recommend? I would like to be able to control some effects on the mic like echo etc... Is this even possible to do with my reciever? Am I going to need something very expensive to get this to work? Right now I am clueless about how to connect all of this to get it mixed to one signal in the reciever. Especially since I have digital optical out. Is it best to simply get a karaoke/DVD player or something that has a mic input andw ill play cd+g? The thing is I am going to build a home theater PC later on, so what can you guys suggest because I am totally confused at this point and I don't even know what to search for. Thanks for your help in advance. |

If you did some research you should've found that most don't recommend using home recievers & speakers for karaoke. They just aren't designed for the rigors of live vocals & will eventually be damaged (more than likely) & and also won't produce the sound quality & you'll end up over eq'ing adding to possible equipment damage. You would be better off getting a small 'pro' system (small mixer & a set of powered speakers (or an amp/speaker package)) designated strictly for karaoke in the home. But of course this will be over your budget - but cheaper than having to replace your home theater equipment in a couple years or sooner. |

Thanks Lonman. There is really no space for me to put more speakers in the room becuse everything is configured perfectly for 5.1 sound. I did do a lot of reaidng on here and someone mentioned that although not recommended I can simply turn the treble down a bit on the mic and I should be okay... I think I may need to get a mixer anyway to do what I want. Can someone please help me answer the questions that I asked? Is it possible to do all this with my reciever through a mixer of some sort? I have no idea how all the connections will work. Thanks. |

Lonman already answered you on a system. Home theatres are not designed to handle live music. You can get an all in one system, but even the more expensive ones sound like crap. So as Lonman recomended, get a small mixer and the proper speakers/amp. Good sound does cost money, It's a fact of life. CD+G stands for Compact Disc with Graphics, which means when played on a compatible machine they lyrics will come up on the screen. These discs are the standard for the trade. The discs with 1.000s of songs on them are called Super CDGs, but many professionals will not use them as it is the same as putting al your eggs in one basket (ie, it breaks or gets damaged, you're screwed). |

I suggest that you contact the folks who entertained you with their home system. If you found it acceptable sound quality wise, then maybe you can do the same for little money. Generally speaking, Karaoke is best supported via pro audio equipment, not home audio....But it can sound ok when connected to your home audio system.....It all depends on your system/speakers and your ability to mix-match components....Oh, and it also depends on just how much sound quality you need and the size of the room. If all you want is the ocassional ability to entertain folks in a small living room, then don't hesitate to patch into you home audio system......But If your friends and you are real karaoke freaks, then you need to go pro with the gear. |

Thanks guys. No no freaks, just to occasionally sing. I am thinking of building a HTPC though. Do you think I should still get a mixer though, or will I be able to do all of that through the PC? Also how much do speakers that are suitable for karaoke usually run? |

Sorry, but a PC needs to go thru a mixer on it's way to the amp and speakers....You can avoid the mixer with a PC, but it would take an expensive sound card that would accept a decent mic...It realy is cheaper to just buy a cheap mixer and use your built in sound card....You patch the L/R outs from the PC into the mixer and then plug in any old low Z dynamic mic and you are good to go. You can find a very servicable mixer at musician'sfriend for 50 bucks.....Just add the .com and you can google them up. Speakers are a toss up....It really depends on the size of the room and how efficient you want them to be....I would look for at least 2 way cabs with 10" woofers and a high end horns or tweeter with passive crossovers built in....Larger rooms need larger speakers....All the way up to 15" woofers with horn....Either way, you need 2 way cabs with built in crossovers. Then select an amp to match the speakers and you are good to go. Well, except for the video card......I suggest an ATI All In Wonder 9200 or better for that. |

Thanks buddy. But here is the problem that I am seeing. Since it is a home theater pc, I am going to be using the digital optical/coax output to get AC3 surround sound from movies. I can usually only use one output on the sound card so I will need a mixer tha t will take digital input, and when the track is DD 5.1 or DTS just pass it on to my reciever. Is there such a thing? Room is about 2200 sq ft. Also any chance that the JBL S38 speakers will handle it? |

You are going to need 600-1000 watts program rated main speakers plus bass @ 2000 watts program or better to fill a 2200 sq ft room and have realy clean sound. I ain't familar with your JBL speakers.....Nor do I do digital sound or attempt to interface home audio with pro audio at the levels you need. I keep my HA and PA as separate systems.....My HA was purchased as a all-in-one system that came in one big box...I just uncrated it and patched it together as described in the destruction manual....I'm fortunate if I can find the remote for it, and even luckier if I can figure it out when I do find it. Maybe someone else here can help you. Either way, I hope your system rocks! |
