The reason I ask is that reading on here some people are using jbl, jl audio cerwin vega and many others, now my experience is that you can buy these in home speaker setups or even car audio, Ive seen how speakers are built, and to me a speaker is a speaker just some are built with better cones, waffles and magnets. Some have bigger voice coils or even dual coils. So what is the difference that I am looking for? Can I build cabinets, with say a home speaker setup, just replacing the speakers in the cabinet? |

I'll let a more technical person answer this, Yet "fidelity" or the quality of sound you get in your home speakers vs club PA speaker designs that are pretty much designs that push power and volume (I believe) is a difference.. Home stereo speakers or "Hi Fi" speakers are generally more sensitive, and distribute sound differently. Different cabinet designs for different applications. At least that's how I understand it.. I'm not a tech however. PA cabs are made to handle more power, and push more volume, yet seldom allow for the intricate dispersion of sound that would be aesthetically pleasing on a good Stereo speaker design, or a home entertainment audio cab where you'd want different features and greater sensitivity.. (Although I was plenty happy with the Bose 901's as acoustic gig PA cabs) |

If you pulled a pa speaker out of its cabinet and compared it to a hifi speaker the first huge difference would be magnet size, Also the pa's have high heat coils so you can crank them at high wattage for many hours without a problem. Some amps can also be damaged by using a speaker with too few ohms. Why play with fire? Buy a low end set of pa speakers, Plenty of sales this time of year, Good luck. |

You can fersure build your own cabs and still use PA speakers....In fact, PA speakers can be lots cheaper when bought "out of the box" than many hi end home audio speakers. You use the same formulas for either. The formulas are free from various places on the web or you can even find free programs that calculate speaker box sizes for you. It's the horns on PA speakers that really make the difference. They are designed to reach way out. The woofers are just heavier and have larger magnets and beefier voice coils and maybe special methods of handling extra heat loads. Folks that build their own PA speakers sometimes place the horns in separate boxes cause horns don't need their box size controlled like woofers....Then they can raise the horns and angle them downwards into the audience for better coverage. |
