Post subject:  Microphone Help Please
I recently recieved a VocoPro DKP-10G for my birthday - the mics that came with it aren't very good.  Does anyone have recommendations for inexpensive quality mics?

PS - since I recieved it as a gift - does anyone know if the VocoPro DKP-10G is any good?

if you do a search in the forum for "vocopro" you'll find most of us don't have anything nice to say about it. That is, if the mods haven't deleted them.

Unfortunately, the retailers that sponsor the site don't like a blanket slamming of the products, and wish that we direct negative commentary on any products to the manufacturers. And I can honestly see their point... it's hard to make sales when others are tearin' them apart. And we've been asked to try to be as respectful as possible in this regard.

I PERSONALLY have never owned a vocopro unit of any kind, but I've seen a couple in operation... and I'm impressed with what they promise to do. But I also know those three units have EACH been serviced at least once each. And many good techies that I know and trust have each had horror stories... so when I bought my amp and players, I made other choices based on other KJS that had great things to say about them.

As far as a mic, are you looking for wired or wireless?

Inexpensive and quality are terms that don't really go together.  I don't know if you're looking for wired or wireless, but either way you can't go wrong with Shure.  And in my humble opinion, mics are something that you don't want to skimp on.  

PS - Save the cheap mics for the really drunk singers that you don't want slobbering all over your good mics.

I vote for Audio Technica ATR30 as a very inexpensive but quality microphone.  I think I have even seen it at Best Buy.  It's a little bit more sensitive the the Shure SM58 and seems warmer to me.  At all costs avoid any cordless mic that's selling in the $100 and less price range.  With cordless, you really cannot spend $50.00 and expect quality.

Thank you all for your feed back.

I'm so disapointed to hear how much Vocopro suck - but at least it was just a gift, so I guess I'll enjoy it till it dies, and technically - I'm not out any money on it!

Also - thank you for the info on the mics.  I am planning on going corded - just because I knew I wasn't going to be able to purchase a decent cordless one for around $50. but I was hopeful I'd be able to get an ok Corded one for that price.

I'll definitely check out the Shure and the Audio Technica!

I personally have found the Shure SM-48,  SM-57 & SM-58 all to be workhorses of microphones in my studio. They are quite durable, and do a satisfactory job.  For your own purposes most likely (especially in a non-studio type setting) you aren't going to need extraordinary features, so for karaoke they'd be quite adequate, and if you are portable how expensive of a microphone do you want to risk losing anyway ? Until the end of the month Shure also has a $10 rebate. You can usually find the SM-58 microphone priced from $79-$99 new on any of the larger mail-order music store sites, or in their catalogs.

I purchased that Vocopro DK10  unit a few months back as a fill in for emergencies.
Without slamming the product I will say this.  Its a home consumer unit as it is advertised to be.  I did need to take it on a few pro gigs and can honestly tell you
I wasn't impressed.  Many of the cdg's graphics were garbled and I never had nor do I do now have that problem with the RSQ triple tray.  The buttons on the unit are low quality and overall it is worth the money I spent ($100) .

Does it work.... Yeah 80% of the time flawlessy

The Shure PG-58 is a nice corded mic for a tight budget - about $50 and includes a cable.

The pg58 corded is great to use for those singers too drunk to handle the expensive stuff. They sound good and they take a lickin and keep on tickin.

The Audio technica previously mentioned is an ok wireless mic, Its a little bass/boomy if ya know what i mean(Great for Big Bopper tunes).

I only purchased a vocopro dual wireless once and had immediate bad luck with it.

I'm still using an AS890 dual wireless for years. Very good mics, One plastic battery cap is stripped but i just black ductape it.

I will put in a good word for one vocopro winner, The DVM-100G Digital video mixer. Excellent product.
