Here is an item from a newsletter I get:

"Top Tunes:  The Next Victim Of Piracy

Another manufacturer has opted to discontinue sales and close its doors due to illegal copying and publisher pressure. Top Tunes   has told us that as of December 31st 2005, they will no longer manufacture any and all product bearing the name Top Tunes and will destroy all remaining inventory. This is the second Karaoke manufacturer that has been forced to close due to declining disc sales. Top Tunes has been one of Karaoke Worlds top selling brands for over 4 years and will be sorely missed."

Go figure - huh :headscratch:

Hmmm, weren't they ones named in a large lawsuit against several manufacturers regarding producing music illegally?  Why would they feel the need to "destroy" all remaining stock rather than try & sell the rest & make what little bit of money they could.  Could be that they NEED to destroy through court order?
But that's just speculation on my part.

Lonman is closer to the truth... they are supposedly opening a new line of discs that are supposed to be 100% licensed... priddis has also closed it's doors...

Guys....... don't make me cry.

This surely can't happen. I will organize the BIGGEST strike in history if that ever happens to Chartbuster & Sound Choice.

Speaking of preparing a strike...... Phil, all of us members, I didn't think to ask, but most of us do pay "dues"...... are we union?

Chartbuster is being sued as we speak by producers & artists of music that CB hasn't been paying fees on as well.

I have to laugh, though.

"Top Tunes - the next victim of piracy!" LMFAO!!

First of all, I still remember their Evanescence disc that got yanked... TT217 I believe, because of licensing issues. Others too.

Any company that rushes to get the songs out there as fast as TT did, and like Stardisc does for country, can't be going the legit route and getting total licensing... in fact, I remember a discussion I had with PHM about the song Talk Talk cover song "It's My Life"... they initially went the route of having their studio musicians make the song, but they were denied the licensing... they'd already had the song PRINTED, and had to scrap that disc... yet their rival THM was able to get it.

hmmmm

Tig,
I don't know where you're getting your information from, but Priddis has not closed shop.

RE:  IMPORTANT CHANGES

To My Loyal Customers,

2005 was a year of changes in the karaoke industry.  Priddis Music has not escaped the pressures that have forced these adjustments.  This letter is to formally announce the following changes, beginning January 16th, 2006.

Discontinued Priddis Product.  Priddis Music discs, for the most part, will be phased out during 2006.  Ultimately, a handful of titles will remain available.  We will notify you as discs are discontinued.  After the first of the year, Priddis discs will not be returnable for credit.  You may exchange Priddis discs, which you paid for and were not free add-ons, for other Priddis discs which have not yet been discontinued.

New Label.  The Priddis catalog of music is being re-released under the ProSound Karaoke label.  Priddis has licensed the use of it’s logos to ProSound.  These logos will be on the ProSound packaging, minus the “priddis” name, so the product is recognizable to our existing customers.  Only the most popular songs from the Priddis Catalog will be re-released under the ProSound label.

New Releases.  New releases of fresh, new music will begin under the ProSound label starting January, 2006.  This will be the same quality music our customers have come to expect.

Distribution.   Beginning January 16th, 2006, Priddis discs and the new ProSound Karaoke discs will no longer be available directly from Priddis Music.  Dealers and distributors may order the discs through ProSing, 6365 53rd Street • Suite B, Pinellas Park, FL 33781.  For your convenience, our current toll free phone numbers will be rerouted to begin ringing at ProSing.

I thank you for your years of loyalty to the Priddis line of product and your willingness to accept these adjustments.  I look forward to greater success, for you and for me, with the new ProSound Karaoke line of discs.  I will be available at the NAMM show at ProSing booth #7018, as will Dale Miller - owner of ProSing, to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Many thanks,

C'mon, Top Tunes wasn't all that great to begin with, they just put out songs that others couldn't seemingly get licensing for.  Quality wasn't great.

I'm still willing to bet that the lawsuit they were in regarding illegally produced music started opening their eyes & realized they were in a big pile of (@$%&#!).
Chartbuster may be in the same boat soon.

did you even read their letter? LMAO and i never said their website was going to be gone... read their letter AGAIN and see that their game plan is to phase it out during 2006 and to re-release their label under another name... I can break the letter down into smaller words if necessary...

Hey Lonman, I'd be interested in knowing how you found out about chartbuster.  Is there a web site or magazine that helps keep you informed on what's going on in the industry? Things like this going on with cdg labels is something we KJs definately need to know....

The real pirates in this senario is the companys suing to get rid of the competition.. It happened with Ma Bell, the power industry and the petrolem industry. In a few years we will be buying cd's from the one who is paying their attornys the most...

And when it dons on them that the major market is private owners of karaoke machines in basements then their lobbyists in congress will attempting to pass laws to gain entry into homes to enforce their slaughtered versions of the copyright laws. With the current world situation I doubt very seriously if the FBI or any other .gov is going to be concerned with what cd's somebody is singing to in the privacy of their own home. And by the way at a private party RIAA nor anybody else has a right to enter...Yet...

The issue is for COMMERCIAL use not private use.  You making a copy to use in your home without being paid is fair use.  Making a copy to use in your show where you are being paid is COMMERCIAL and is not fair use.  This is clearly stated.

It was something I heard through the grapevine & did a little Google research to find many news clips from valid news sources.
