[font=Comic Sans MS][/font]What is the easiest instrument to learn how to play in your opinion between bass guitar and keyboards?

Depends on the music style.  I've seen keyboardist of the 80's doing simple 1 to 2 note holds on songs.  Bass guitar can be as simple as a steady 4/4 driving beat using 3 notes for the chord changes.
The other hand if you are doing slap bass or something more melodic, you'll need good strong fingers & coordination - for either.

Country southern rock that style of music and I have no experience with either of these instruments but would love to start learning to play one of them.

Pick the one you want to learn & get the instrument & a video teaching system.  These are good & learn at your own pace type systems.  A buddy of mine learned the bass & was playing in a band less than 6 months later with enough knowledge to be able to keep a good rhythm & some ok fills.  3 years later is now a very accomplished player.  He did his video courses several times per day & practiced a couple hours every few hours though.

I definitely would say bass guitar is easier.

If you learn to play the piano you will be more musically diverse because you'll have to learn treble clef and bass cleff. You will have to learn to place 10 fingers instead of 5 for the bass.

When you play the piano your left hand plays bass clef and your right hand plays treble clef.

I would take a lesson in both and you will see immediately which is harder.

Although it is true you could learn just to play chords on a keyboard for fill in a band.
But this is extremely boring. It takes years to learn how to play a piano.

That's why you see a lot of kids in high school that have a 3 man band - 1 on guitar, 1 on bass, 1 on drums. You don't have a lot of piano players. If it was easy there would be more of them.

I think you should also consider what you are doing it for and how much time you want to dedicate to it.

Is it for personal enjoyment or to be in a band?

Not true. If you have never held a bass in your hand, it will be virtually impossible to do scales, your finger won't reach over 4 frets, where-as with a keyboard a scale in C major will be much easier, (all white notes)
Once you start getting comfortable with your fingers, you will have 2 options, learn the right way or the wrong way. The right way is to go to a music teacher who will teach you the theory that goes with the music, and the wrong way is any other way. Forget those self-help books and videos. They blow.

Except for the fact that you use 4 fingers, not 5 on the bass :whistle: The piano/keyboard is more versatile, but for you to  play any of these instruments well enough to actually say "I can play this ............", I would say the bass is the least time consuming, and easier to learn.

I've played keyboards for many years - I think learning keyboards can give you a better basic understanding of music , notes etc.  Once you understand the musical aspects of timing and notes and keys etc. You can look at many other instruments with a better understanding .

I couldn't have said that better. Without the theory, learning ANY instrument is difficult.

I took piano lessons when I was a kid. Never became any good at it. Played keyboards in a band (just chords) boring. I can't imagine trying to learn from a book. Played the tuba for 25 years. Tuba is like the bass quitar in the fact you mainly keep the beat, rarely get to do the fun stuff like play the melody or solo. I actually have never played the bass guitar. But love the sound of one.

Allstar - I guess 5 fingers to play the bass guitar would look a little funny - woops on my part. I prefer air guitar - easier to learn.

I was in a professional band for about 2 years then tried to get back into it after my band broke up. I personally think that an acoustic guitar is easier to learn to play than a bass guitar. If you ever try to put together a band, you will find that drummers and guitarists are a dime a dozen but singers and bassists are hard as hell to find. This is not only because of the popularity of the instrument, but also that an intermediate guitar player can hold his own in a band while a bass player of the same level just wouldn't suffice.

You can learn 5 guitar chords in about a week (C, D, G, Am, Em) and be able to play 25% of the rock songs ever written if you have any rhythm at all. If you do NOT have any rhythm, good luck with any instrument, as that is not exactly something you can learn!!

as far as learning how to play it would have to be the bass.  fewer things to think about and learn.  that is learning enough to play but not be spectacular.  the guitar takes alot of time and practice to get fingerings down especially more difficult chord changes and acoustic guitar requires one to develop tough finger pads.  i started learning on an acoustic and quickly decided to pick up an electric.  it wasn't easier mind-wise, but it was easier on my fingers.  once i learned how to play (chords and such), i switched to the acoustic to develop further.  i agree with others that the piano will definitely make a more rounded musician since one needs to understand so much to play.  i never even tried to learn how to play piano, but i imagine knowing how to play the six string would help immensely!

A buddy of mine wants me to learn the bass by learning songs he was going to use in performing, I guess he figures I'll just learn that and only be good for performing with his band.  If, and it is a big if, I decide to that, I want to do it right.  Right now all I own an accoustic guitar.

I can't say that I've ever touched a bass guitar, but I play the piano and a 12 string and for me, it was the guitar that was easier.... there are only 12 strings lol so when I messed up it was easy to see how to fix, but that's about it.

Some day i will get me a bass. But not electric bass. Strickly upright acoustic bass! Lots of people play electric but uprights are just OH SO MORE COOL and VERSATILE. You can do an entire jazz show with just an upright and a sax.

Thanks so much for all the replies. I talked to my wife about the 2 instruments and my desire to play one and I came home yesterday to a new Fender Bass and amp. That made my decision so much easier...

 I started young, the organ was quite small. Parent's wouldn't let me take lessons. I had to teach myself. The women that came around must've thought I was adorable. They'd giggle when I'd put my little hands on my Hammond Spinet.
