When I go singing I use my hands alot and move about alot and even do the "Air-Instrument" thing(in my case not an air-guitar but an air-upright bass) so i need my hands free to get my groove on while singing. So over time I've become accustomed to NOT HOLDING A MIC. Many people like it the other way and prefer to hold a cordless or corded mic. I like the mic on a mic stand tho. More and more tho as I go around I find shows with NO MIC STANDS! Im not very comfortable at all holding a mic--I need my hands free. So when Im at a place with no mic stand is quite uncomforatble and awkward feeling. So My question is whats with no mic stands? Seems to me this is a BASIC piece of gear that a KJ should have at the show. Thoughts??? Opinions??? Cheap shots??? |

Yo SwingCat I use a mic stand for certian song's like Rod Stewarts " I don't want to Talk about it" And a few other's Most of my John Lennon I use a mic stand too. other songs I need to be struttin around. There is a KJ here that broke a mic stand and hasn't replaced it. I choose my song's at that place around the fact of the mic Stand. Isn't that weird? Funny you should bring this topic up. Michael |

I don't always need to use a mic stand but I do like the OPTION of using one for certain types of songs or during a long break in a song so I can get my freak on ... I know many KJ's who don't like to use a mic stand predominantly so they have a little more control of handing out the mic itself and also to keep from tempting customers to walk up and grab it outta the stand... it can also be removed for space consideration... at matt's show it is very difficult to have a stand for the singer's remote mic simply because of the amount of space that he has to setup in... I think he has less space now to put his equipment than he ever has there so it is even more of an issue... it can also be just one more thing for drunks or patrons to stumble over, around, into, onto, use as a weapon or other things that murphy's law decides to throw at the KJ mic stands are nice when a club has at least some kind of stage or platform area that is the designated singing area to add an aura of performing live etc... mic stands can also help remote microphones from wandering too far away and also to (hopefully) keep the mics from being set down just anywhere, especially if the KJ is busy or has his back turned... nothing worse than turning around and knocking the mic off the table because the last singer simply walked up to hand in the mic and just sets it down etc... just a few thoughts about it anyways...- tig |

As a KJ I bring a mic stand for my own use to keep MY hands free to handl discs books, etc, As A singer when I occasionaly sing a song at my shows I do prefer to use the stand . just an old habit from the band days when I sat behing my keyboard. One reason I prefer to use the mic holders on the TV stand for OTHER singers at my shows is I find it easier to place the mic back in there versus slide it in the mic stand holder. BUT If a singer wants to use the stand there is never a hesitation . I found that 95% of the singers prefer to hold the mic in hand. Mic stands are about $10 and probably should be a standard option on all KJ shows |

yeah, ol' Kurt SAID he was gonna talk about this... He also loves to STOMP on certain songs... so if you're cdg based and not computer, warning to his patronage at certain shows! ! In all honesty, I do take a mic stand, despite the space issues that Tig brings up so well... only because of people like that! And I'll confess I love using it too! |

I don't use the "karaoke" TV stand with the mic clips so I have to have stands. |

I'm getting lazy in me old age When I first started a boom stand with the mic cord clipped to the stand (no mic removal) was for duets and when the gang was singing enmasse... A regular stand held the mic for the lead singer.. After getting a rugged tv stand with mic holders ( they are easier to get out and drop back in) I find sometimes we are doing a show with the stands still in the van...However when there are half a dozen drunks on stage fighting to hold 2 mics and jumping up and down is when mic cords get stretched and broke at the mic end... |

One mic stand per mic. The singer has the option of keeping it in the stand or taking it out. |

man.... If I used a mic stand I wouldn't know what the heck to do with my hands! ha! I get kinda nervous so I like a mic with no stand, but WITH a cord, so I can hold the mic with one hand and fiddle with the cord in my other hand! I'm so sad! There's only one place I go to that has a stand..... it's also on a little platform thing... I go and take the mic outta the stand and step off the platform outta the lights! LOL ..... i do like the cordless mic idea though..... cuz then I could go sit at my table and sing, that's always nice too! |

I use the mic stands, but whenever I personally use the mic I'll remove it from the stand, and a few singers remove it too. I prefer corded mics to be honest, if I gotta do a 4 hour show the batteries in most wireless systems don't hold up well for that long. It seems I can get about 2 hours out of the two wireless I own, so I don't really use em anymore except for when I gotta go out in a crowd or something. I hate headsets and lapel mics. To me they are tacky, but to each their own. |

My karaoke is at local pubs there is barely room for me, there is no room to have a mic stand. I do have one, my second microphone sits on it till someone sings a song together. I use wirelles mic and encourage sings to walk around and be part of the crowd. |

Leathco, dunno what kinda batteries you are using, but I've found the 9volt systems that I use will last for at LEAST two shows per battery! Moreso if I use a heavy name brand like Duracell! But the ol' Walgreens discount batteries work just fine. |

Duracell rechargeables. Ah well, I like my corded ones just fine. No chance of signal interference. |

actually, I've seen that the rechargable ones don't hold up NEAR as well as the ol' throwaways, sad to say! |

Most high end microphone suggest that you not use recharagable batteries as the get older the voltage drops. |

I am all cordless and don't bring mic stands. I hand the mics over and get them back after a song, unless I have the singer pass it along to the next up. In fact, I removed the mic holders from my TV stand after going cordless, though singers can still lay the mics down in front of the screen. No one has requested one, or complained. I suppose if asked, I could bring one. It would be difficult in some locations as just clearing adequate space for a singer can be a challenge when packed (in these venues I rely solely on house TVs permanently mounted - a tv/stand would be problemmatic). Good thread - with all the positive comments, I'll reconsider it for some jobs. |

[glow=darkorchid]Ok let me get all "freudian" for a moment...... no but um what you might want to consider it that it's a comfort thing for you to have the mic stand there because it's a barrier between you and the audience...... I know this sounds really kooky, but next time you perform see if you feel more nervous without the mic stand or just inconvienced I'll send you my bill [/glow] |
