Post subject: | How do I reconfigure my system to run Karaoke in Mono? |
I've been running karaoke in STEREO since I bought my own equipment in March. Popular consensus has said that they prefer karaoke in MONO. Now I'm not the best in the world at figuring out amps and mixers. The directions, however read like stereo instructions. I currently have the QSC RMX 2450 pegs in the back shifted to Stereo mode. The Instruction Manual shows alternate positions for Parallel and Bridge Mono modes. I have a 3 prong microphone cord going from Channels 1 and 2 of my amp to the ST OUT L/R on the back of my Yamaha MG 12/4 mixer. I have a Numark CDG player that requires 2 channels, so I have them running into the stereo channels 9/10 and 11/12 with 1/4 inch cables. I guess my question is: to try running in MONO tonight how do I configure my equipment? Do I just plug into different channels on the mixer, like the 5/6 and 7/8 or do I need to reconfigure my amp too? A big thanx in advance to all advice giving! |

One method is run the left channel into 11 with 2efx at minimum and right channel into 12 with 2efx at unity.. This gives a finer control ( fader) to balance efx with non... In an odd shaped venue where one speaker is farther from the center of the audience than the other, the efx can be panned or emphasized on the rear speaker or visa versa... |

Take a look at the manual and set your amp to run in "Parallel Input Mode" I belive this is what you need to do to get the same signal (mono) out of both channels. All your connects would be the same except instead of cotrolling a Left & Right stereo signal you will be controlling (2) mono signals on 2 channels. |

It is incorrect to run in parellel input mode. PARALLEL INPUT MODE This mode is just like Stereo mode, except that the inputs for Channel 1 and Channel 2 are internally connected together. A signal into any input jack will therefore drive both channels directly. Each channel's gain control still functions as usual, and each channel feeds its own speaker load. You can patch the input signal on to additional amplifiers by using any of the remaining input jacks. Example: • One mono signal driving both channels, with independent gain control for each speaker system. WHEN TO USE IT Parallel the inputs when driving two speakers with one input signal (parallel mode) while keeping separate control of both channels' gain, filtering, and limiting. Use them in bridged mono mode to patch the signal to additional amplifiers through the extra input jacks. NOTE: If you're using a balanced signal, use only balanced patch cables; even one unbalanced cable will unbalance the entire signal chain, possibly causing hum. NOTE: Turn off the "Parallel Inputs" switches when feeding the amp two separate signals. The only way to properly run a mono signal is at the mixer level. Some mixers will have switches on stero input channels to run in mono. But the model you own you will have to run your wire to the left input (mono) of 2 seperate mixer channels. |

Agree with Jam, simplest way will be the parallel configuration on the amp. This will sum both channels while keeping everything connected exactly as you have now. |

Again if you read my post directly from the QSC RMX2450 owners manual you can not run the amp in parallel with both inputs of the amplifer being used you will destroy your amplifier! |

Yep you're right. Not thinking straight today, home sick. Parallel takes a mono signal (1 channel) and channels to both outputs. |

The mixer you are using can't be configured mono through the stereo channels by itself. Some mixers have the ability to choose the output configuartion ie sending a left/right stereo input to 1 left, 1 right or mono summed output (making the stereo channel mono). The 12/4 doesn't allow that option on the stereo channels. So what you need to do is run the players into the mono channels which will require 2 separate faders per player then make sure the pan/bal is straight up (12:00) - not too big of a deal - but can be a nusance. This will allow you to keep every other connection exactly the way you run now. |

Tried it the other day and you were right, it was a nuisance. Is there a way I can reconfigure the way my amp/mixer is set up? Or is that not possible and I need to look into a new mixer, which would suck, I really like the Yamaha. Thanx again for the knowledge! |

if I were you, I'd get the stereo to mono rca cables, and hook it physically up that way! |

Well he could do that, however it CAN short something out as it is taking 2 separate outputs together to sum the channel - this isn't a good thing. There is a way to MAKE a special Y connector however. Good article on how to make a proper "summing" Y connector but you do have to know how to read a schematic & somewhat knowledgeable with resistors. http://www.rane.com/note109.html |
