Here is a question I was asked by one of my karaoke followers.  I am not sure about the answer, since I never had a contest (don't like to turn it into a competition).

The question:

What would you want to hear from a guy if you were voting a karaoke contest?

"A round for the whole bar!"

Just kidding.  "My Maria", "God Bless the USA", "Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound" are a few.

Dr Feelgood - Motley Crue
Seperate Ways - Journey
Fire Woman - The Cult
Jet City Woman - Queensryche

Somthing not everyone can sing, and will show good vocal range.

One of the MOST important aspects of choosing a 'CONTEST" song is not only does it have to be sung well (which goes without saying) is it has to be very recognizable to most in the audience and judging area.  A song that is obscure that is sung FANTASTIC most likely will not get as high a score as a more POPULAR or well known song .  Upbeat songs generally do better than slow songs unless you can put a lot of feeling in those slow ballads.....

As a judge I want to hear something that is going to make me FEEL what they are singing - song selection isn't THAT big of a factor, but certain genres aren't as good as others.  Most people are good enough singers, but they are just singing the words with no emotion & that is what makes the difference between a nice & enjoyable performance to a performance that makes you go "WOW".  When someone can get another person to feel their emotion in the song - THAT is what I want to see & what I personally judge on.

I never can get fully into contests, it's mostly depends on who the contestants brings with them to cheer them on.  I don't care if any of my associates support me, I'm just there to sing a song whether I place or not.  And I always do something that no one will ever try.

I won first place in a contest on my first Cruise to the bahama's in 2003 singing Summer Wind By Frank Sinatra.

Last year I took Second Place singing That's Life By Frank Sinatra

Tomorrow I go on my 3rd anual Birthday cruise to the Bahama's by my self and will read the crowd before picking a song I'll let you know :)

Agree with Lonman about the Passion of the singer singing the song. no matter what you sing put all you have in it. you will glow with an aoura and people will see that no matter what song it is.

Now wait a minute, I won a Karaoke contest with Summer Wind.  When lots of guys are singing Sinatra, I usually come out ahead.  Except when this one guy did "My Kind of Town."  That one is hard.  Can you do it?

We need to have a Sinatra-only contest somewhere.

Just Got Back from the Cruise I took Second Place singing  Neil Diamonds
" I Am I Said"
should have used my Race card since the judges were all Black and so was the winner.....Hell _ she would have...lol

I dont care for contest's I just do it to get the Thrill of a Professional Stage and an audiance of around 600. The sound was phenominal , lighting and spotlights, they sell a copy of the performace on VHS.

There is no TV monitor for the word's so it makes it great for true singer wanabees. I got hit on alot as I walked around the ship for a few days. its amazing how many people like to go and just listen to the Karaoke Ledgens Show.

well anyway thats my story
Me

PS no Dave I havent Tried it
