I have been running karaoke in STEREO with my speakers set to criss-cross at the point where the singer should be standing.  A buddy of mine that has been running karaoke forever says thta he always runs his shows in MONO.  Just curious, but I wanted to ask the other KJs out there what their thoughts are about this.  Maybe in certain situations one is better than the other...  I don't know.

I think if you have a "perfect" set up in where a stereo sound can be heard equally by all - nothing beats a good stereo sound.  That being said --There are very few places that host Karaoke Shows that allow for a good stereo set up.  Usually you're setting up one speaker facing one way and another facing another part of the bar etc etc.   So if the set up allows --I'd run stereo--- More than likely in order for all to hear the full sound of your system you run in mono allowing for the full sound to cover more area.   MY $.02  which I've learned from asking the very same questions !! :oh yeah:

I agree with JAMKARAOKE. My moto is mono for life gigs, stereo for recordings.

I have found that although most karaoke tracks are technically stereo tracks, they very rarely utilize the stereo effects, i.e. putting different instruments/sounds into different channels, so in this regard there is little difference between stereo and mono for karaoke. The biggest exception to this rule is mutiplex, which is really just a stereo effect with the guide vocals on one channel.

Where stereo makes a HUGE difference is on your filler music, since music is so uber-produced these days and has TONS of stereo effects that you would miss in mono.

My favorite is Gwen Stephani panting from speaker to speaker throughout the No Doubt tune HELLAGOOD. Turns me on in stereo, not so much without the effect :)

I run stereo unless the bar setup dictates I must run mono. One Bar it not very big but I use a speaker in the bar and a speaker in the dining area. Most singers hang out in the dining area and I crack it up but in the bar I keep the level so on can carry on a converastion.

It's rare that i'll run stereo.  U\Like said, UNLESS the entire room can benefit (which most can't), there is no point.  Because the tracks are recorded in stereo is why.  I used to run in stereo years ago, but then 1 song - Van Halen (can't remember title right now), the way early VH was recorded was guitar on one side only.  When played in a room with the speakers set with any kind of distance between them (which they should be anyway), one side of the room got the guitar while the other side didn't.  After that it was mono all the way.  Don't know why I didn't before, whenever I ran sound for bands, it was ALWAYS mono - you wil rarely find a live band that will run their mains in stereo.
