Post subject:  Singing lyrics over the "wrong" music

Hi there,

So, a few weeks ago I heard a guy singing the lyrics to one song over the music to another (without the lyrics).   It was fantastic. Its not easy to pull off, though, I suppose -- and it requires a lot of up-front research and perhaps even more trial and error.

For example, and this is an obvious one, cause of the Hawiian guy's already having done it, but, one could sing the lyrics to "somewhere over the rainbow" over the music for "what a wonderful world," right?

So does anyone else have any such pairings to offer?

You mean like singing the words to "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle?"  I've heard that some people do that.

I saw The Blind Boys of Alabama perfrom Amazing Grace set to Purple Haze. Once live at The Bite of Oregon in Portland and once on Austin City Limits on TV.

I've been doing "Boulevard of Broken Dreams/Wonderwall" when choosing Green Day's latest song.

A local radio station compiled those two a while ago, worked out real well.

Heard someone do Gilligans Island/Beverly Hillbillies & one other lyrics over Stairway To Heaven.

I often flip between La Bamba and Twist and Shout...oh wait, that IS the same music.  Kinda like the whole Want a New Drug/Ghostbusters thing.

There's a version of 'Stayin Alive' that came out a few years ago that had more of a modern dance beat than the original, and someone was rapping some different lyrics to it.  Anyway, there's a group of guys at this place I go to on occasion that will have the KJ pop in the original (karaoke) version.  2 of them sing the high falsetto part the Bee Gees are famous for, while the third guy will bust into a freestyle rap.  His lyrics are way different than the dance-mix version I would hear in clubs and on the radio... but it's very entertaining nonetheless.

Also, I've been kind of wanting to try singing 'Karma' (by Alicia Keys) over Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' as Alicia had done on a remix version of Karma.  I've looked for a real karaoke backing for that same remix, but so far have only come across the original or radio versions for 'Karma.'

Very interesting. Thanks everyone. I might try one or two of those. I'm always on the lookout for more...
