I had this idea for a long time...and I had told some friends about it...but they think that it won't work
I have this dream where an FM radio station is set up SOLEY playing karaoke music from all over the world.....something like SS...only on radio!! Naturally it will take in sponsors like any other radio station. The detractors say that the reason that it won't work is because ordinary people do not like to listen to amateur singers...ONLY to professionals.
What do you think?

they do this on Cable TV all the time... and there are reasons it's done at 2AM on obscure channels!

Besides, radio stations have to pay Ascap/bmi licensing for every time an artists song is broadcast. With regular songs, you can justify it... people tuning in, buying things at the sponsor's locations, etc. etc.

Not to rain on your parade, but I see a lot of logistical issues with what you're proposing.

How about going after an AM station, and asking for an hour spotlight to begin with?

There are a few online broadcasting stations that play nothing but user karaoke.  Same concept... but you have to be able to find it and I don't think you can catch it driving around in your car.  You can get it through WinAmp.

The difficulties lie in the difference between "live" music (which is most karaoke) and professionally recorded music.  I can see a karaoke show, and there have been some, but a whole station, not sure it would work.  You could do a "live" remote feed from some karaoke bar every night, but then you'd still have to play something else during day (perhaps recorded versions of other evenings?).

live365 has some karaoke stations.

I'm skeptical that it could work, although maybe for a brief one- or two-hour show instead of an entire schedule it would be okay.  For me, one of the attractions of karaoke is knowing that I get to participate in the show.  If I knew I wasn't going to be able to sing and I didn't know the people who were, I'd rather listen to professionals.  Your mileage may vary.

That is what I was told too Tom. I do not know about the USA..but some outlets here in Sydney actually record you (up to you of course). And this is Suzanne's question. If recorded then it would be okay I guess to be played on radio.
And there is a great difference between karaoke singers and professionals. The pros are predictably good....whereas karaoke singers are not!! I suppose one cannot have lobster for dinner every night.....as it gets boring!! And this is why listening to pros....is sometimes boring especially if the similiar music is played over and over. You know that they are going to be good. In short..they are predictable...and boring!!
