I just went in to look for a CD. I hate having to look through every catagory cause I don't understand how any why music is grouped. Sounds like an interesting topic to discuss how music should be grouped so that it is easier to find what we want.
For example, I would like all heavy metal music to be put in the "heavy metal" section. At least I could avoid that :)
Then maybe they could divide jazz into the "easy listening kind", the "big band" kind and the "kind that gives me a headache." :)
Just my two cents.

I used to catagorize. Became too much of a hassle trying to determine what was what - especially these days. So many classifications of music now & the number of crossover genres, it became a nightmare trying to classify then sub classify.

I organize all my songs by artists/album. I use MediaMonkey to track all the ID tag info on my MP3's though. I can search by genre, bpm, artist, track, album, or nearly any other category you can think of.
When I finally get around to going to a computer based show for my karaoke I'll likely setup in a similar fashion and use the disc number/manufacturer code as directories to find the files quicker.
With all the songs that fall into more than one category it's often difficult to determine what genre to put them in. Especially when they keep coming out with new 'genres'.

For My DJ Stuff I use Billboard's Top 20 lists and divide them by:
*Country
*Rock, Alternative
*R&B, Rap
*Top 40
My older stuff gets put into:
*Classic Rock (including Heavy Metal & 80s)
*Oldies (Including 60s & 70s)
*Wedding (Wedding Intros, Dollar Dance, Party Songs, etc.)
*Extra (theme songs, comedy, Bob & Tom, Classical, etc.)
Just my two nickels worth
