Anything by the Temptations, Miracles, Otis Redding, Marvin Gay, Aretha Frankilin, anything Motown BB King, Robert Johnson fall in the traditional Deep Texas Blues category not really R & B |

R&B = Rhythm and Blues Those guys gave you a good sense of oldies R&B, but pretty much any song you hear on the radio that has that deep backbeat but is singing and not rap is R&B as well, like: Usher Destiny's Child/Beyonce R. Kelly Mariah Carey Bow Wow Kanye West Alicia Keys Janet Jackson Prince Brandy |

I always think of Motown when I think of R & B. But that was my era. Riding the school bus listening to a mixture of Yes, Pink Floyd and the Temptations. Maybe that is why I like Motown so much today. I was so into rock that I missed out on how good Motown really was. You Can't Hurry Love (Diana Ross--Phil Collins redid it) is my favorite. Very difficult to sing though. |

And of course if you could actually do "Let's Stay Together" and make it sound good...you might find yourself in a band one day. |

[quote="Lonman @ Tue Sep 06, 2005 8:27 pm"]Well this is a track listing from a Music Maestro "R&B" set, so I would assume anything like these or similarly would work. 4 Brick House Commodores If brick house is on the list, does anyone think that it would be safe to assume that play that funky music white boy would be considered r and b? |

Brick House is kind of disco. "White Boy" is definitely disco. Anything from the seventies with a heavy driving beat that wasn't rock was probably disco. I'm not sure what R & B is anymore either. I'm also no longer sure where the line is between country and rock. Oh yeah...country has a singer with a southern twang. And women country singers tend to wear more clothing :) |

I would call Brick House and Play That Funky Music "funk" music - along with artists like the Gap Band, Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire, Rufus, AWB, etc. As for R&B, the classic stuff I think of would cover Barry White, Curtis Mayfield, Spinners, O'Jays, etc. I think it's expanded a bit these days. In fact, Billboard combines R&B and HipHop in a single chart. I would have thought HipHop & Rap would have been a better pairing, but that music is not much of an area of interest to me (the kids like it so it pays though). I group Hip Hop, Rap, and (current) R&B all under "Urban" in my songlists for DJ work. Disco examples - KC, Chic, Donna Summer, Trammps, Village People, BeeGees, etc. I think of Motown as a separate genre which would include groups like the Temps, Four Tops, Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Smokey, J5, etc. Obviously many artists crossed over between these before, and still do today (e.g., Mariah Carey has "We Belong Together" on the Adult Contemporary chart while "Shake It Off" is on the R&B/HH chart). |

Last night I found that if I decide not to be lazy and do some internet detective work, I could have found out even before I asked that white boy is safe to sing.......Turns out it was the american music awards r & b single of the year for 1976, who da thunk it? thanks again all............. |

Funk music that was "disco-ized". They did that to rock too. Just about everything went disco. Didn't Simon and Garfunkle have a disco song :) ?? Did country ever go disco ??? We have a disco station here in Cincy. It's been on the air for several years. That's scary that the disco station may last longer than disco itself lasted :) |
