Post subject:  hearing delay when singing in mic

I just installed Audacity and am trying to figure it out. So far it looks failry simple. I am having an issue though.  When I sing into the mic, I am hearing myself with a delay in my headphones.  Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Yes, there is a delay through the pc speakers.  Do you think it may be my sound card? I'm working off of my laptop...not sure if that matters.

BadSinger suggested that I download Audacity. I'm working off my laptop and I'm not experiencing  this problem.  Wish I could help.

I am at lost where he problem is. There could be many reasons. But try the following.
Uninstal the program and then reinstal it again.
And at the same time try an other program; KRISTAL if there is still problem with Audacity.

Just a question; When you record did the backing track and the vox track sync?

I have uninstalled Audicity and reinstalled it and had the same problem.  I also tried Kristal and had the same problem.  I even tired various mics that I have.

Just to clarify...I am trying to hear my vocals in real time as I am singing.  So the problem is, as I sing I hear my voice except that it's on a delay. How do I fix this?  I am playing the mp3 through Audicty and then singing with it and then trying to record.

I sure appreciate all your help with this!

Does audacity have a vocal effects section?? It seems to me that if you are having this output through monitor speakers and your headphones that possibly an effect is turned on and you just don't know it. Go through the menus and look for an effects or vocal effects section and see if the delay effect isn't turned on!!

There are a couple different reasons you could be experiencing this problem.

There could be a lag in the sound card circuitry or something within the software that's causing the problem.  I seem to remember an option within one app I have that has a setting for latency but not all apps have this sort of setting (audacity doesn't have this setting that I could find).   Make sure you are set for 'playthrough' on your setup as well as this might be part of the problem.

What sound card are you using?  What are the specs on the PC? How is everything set up? (wired).

Any information you can provide can help to give us a clear picture of what might be the problem.

Thanks for your responses.  I checked Audicity and the vocal delay effect is turned off.

As far as my sound card goes, I have the generic sound card that came with my laptop.

After doing some research, I have come to the conclusion that I need an external mixer.  I am also going to get some speakers.  I am hoping to get everything within a few weeks.  It's going to be cool to have my own little "recording studio".  It's something that I've wanted to do for a long time.
