Dead Beat KJs'

Post subject:  Dead Beat KJs'
I just started making the Karaoke rounds and I’ve noticed something that I find rather surprising.   Out of the number of Karaoke places I’ve visited so far, the majority of the KJs’ I’ve seen have personalities of dead fish.   For the most part they seem to struggle through the show with an air of indifference.   However, there are two KJs’ here that are extremely talented.  Both have fantastic personalities and their audiences seem to just love them, yet for some reason they don’t draw the biggest crowds.  What puzzles me is that the one with the biggest crowd is the worst KJ I’ve seen –  he acts as though it kills him to get up and say you're next.

Oftentimes, singers go to sing & if they see kj's that are being "showmen", they will opt to find another place.  A kj's job is to facilitate a fair rotation, mix a good sound & mingle with the crowd, not be "the entertainer".  
Now a kj still has to have a personality as far as the speaking manner, it has to sound like they are excited to get the people up & not a chore.

Yep! I've had singers actually complain that I don't try to tell jokes (believe me, I'm doing them a favor by not doing that!), or otherwise be a bit more lively such as being more of an entertainer.

To me, being a karaoke host, is NOT an entertainer, as much as knowing what the entertainment IS... the singers, and making them sound the best and making the show move as smoothly as possible.

Having your discs (or computerized disc tracks) ready for the next singer on time, no dead air (or precious little of it), and doing the best job they can do is their job.

At least to me!

Having someone act like a buffoon more than I do (lol) is not karaoke, but a specialized show!

If you are the type of  KJ who is trying to ENTERTAIN the audience all by yourself and OVERDOING it by OVER SINGING YOURSELF , telling JOKES , and just being OVER BEARING . Two things happen I think - The karaoke pro's - Don't have time for a kj who is stealing both the spotlight and prime singing time from them.  And the other SHY type singers they just want to sneak up to the microphone and sing a song or two with out TOO much fanfare.  Otherewise they may not put in a slip.

I've said it many times it's a fine line Good KJ's have to walk.  You have to be there to keep the flow and tempo going , keep everyone interested in the music and singers YET remain almost invisable at times .  Always remaining polite and professional.   Being a KJ is like ..Lonnie describes the correct amount of effects

A KJ is there to facilitate the show, not to be the show.  Nuff Said.

My shows it's the loacation. It may change but I am at a bar where all the younger people go in the area, the bar is overfilled every karaoke night.

Many people do not sing at all. I have lost the Older pro type karaoke singer but they always come back for our contest.

Why do people come to my shows? I pay music and not just karaoke, I break it up usually twice a night with a few dance songs. I keep a fair rotation, usually the rotation is small and there at least 100 people in the bar. I have the largest book in the area. People like the way my setup sounds.

It changes last night I had 16 unique singers, last week I had 42.

I agree there are dead beats out there when I have a night off I usually go out and sing. Most of the time I can't find something to sing and use my own disc, and after I sing a song I would sing anymore because the sound is terrible.
