God I hope I am not beating a dead horse here, I have spent several days searching the forums and yet to come up with the info.

I am looking to step up to a decent/good home system.  It will be used in a rather small room, about 400 sq feet.  I don't need to compensate for anything (I don't plan to entertain much), so I am just looking for the best sound for the $$.

Right now I have a $200 Fleco system run through my surround sound.  As for a price point, I would like to keep it under $1000.  I have the music, I just need help to make me sound better... LOL

Ok, try the Fender PD-150.  It's 150 watts, the speakers were designed by Bose, and it's a basic all-in-one type of system.

There are a lot of other options out there but connect up your existing player, plug in a mic and you're singing in a matter of minutes.  150watts should be more than enough for a room that size BTW.

Of course Lonman and others here have more experience and I hope they chime in....

You can check Target ad for new products.

Thanks for the tip karaokemeister.  I will give that unit a look see.  I was thinking more along the line of piecing some components together.  Then as time and money allow, I could upgrade.  Maybe my budget isn't in line with that thinking.

FWI, I don't have a problem going the ebay way.

Here's a good, cheap route for a good home starter set you could upgrade later:

Behringer PMH660M powered mixer (200 watts per channel, 8 channels, with FX) -$250 at Musician's Friend

Peavey PV115 Speakers (15" woofers, 300Watt continuous handling) - $199 each.

Samson R21 mics $49.99 for three at SamAsh (through you probably already have mics)

Mic cables, speaker stands - About $50-60 total ( you may have this as well).

That's about $650-800 for a good, upgradable home system

You could upgrade the sound later by adding a BBE 362 Sonic Enhancer ($99, will INSTANTLY upgrade your final mix!!), external amp(s), monitor speakers, etc.

Oh, and use your current player in this setup, though for faster seek times and less skipping, you could upgrade to a professional player like the RSQ 333 later as well...

Thank you TopherM.  That is the idea I was thinking of.  The ability to upgrade as we go.
I am not sure I want to use this Fleco system as the player.  We have had problems with it pausing on it's own durring playback.  A major pain in the arse.
I think we will donate it to my wifes daycare.
