The big question of the day is what is YOUR song? Or are you one of those who prefers not to have a signature song and just sing whatever you feel like on a night? I like to do songs that wind everyone up, I am not sure if I have one signature song, but if I did, it would be between war pigs and friends in low places, hmm, sort of different ends of the scale there huh? thanks all            timbo

Don't have "a song".  I try to let my customers know this as well that everything is fair game for everyone.  I get some that come up saying that "Hey they are singing MY song", well you didn't have it up first & they did.
Just because someone does a song that THEY may consider their song, it isn't - in reality!!!

there was a guy at the bar that I go to the other week that through a fit because someone else sang HIS song, this guy does like 3 or 4 songs over and over again, he really needs to broaden his horizons. I always try to come up with more songs for a night than I know I will have time for, just in case. and thanks for the reply

The regulars in bar I go to have their own sets of songs that they we normally sing. Its not so much THE song but rather 'he sings only Kenny Roger' kind of singers. We do have people passing remarks about people stealing their song or so and so song but its done normally in a friendly manner and always taken as a joke.

I've gotten in the habit of singing 'What A Wonderful World' whenever there is an anniversary or recent wedding celebration.  I am lucky enough to be able to do it quite well and it's the only song that I do regularly and cringe when someone else does it.  Usually because they do it poorly (sort of like Paradise by the Dashboard Light).

I don't consider it my song and I've heard it done well, but I also have 30-40 songs that pull from regularly and I only tend to sing that one when requested or the special events like I mentioned earlier.

I dunno my best song.  But I've humbled a number of wanna-be Sinatra singers with my version of New York, New York.  I'm such a heartless pr-ck.  I do take it easy on the guys in their sixties :)

I don't have the best voice in the place.  I just put a lot of work into getting the key and the timing right on my regular songs.

There is ONE time when I respect someone for having "their song."  There is one place where I go where a guy always sings Summer Wind.  I actually won a contest with that song at another place.  But I don't sing it at the first place when this guy is around.  What's funny is that both of us got tired of singing Sinatra and are now singing other stuff.

It's hard to avoid having a "YOUR" song especially if you do some stuff that people enjoy. It ends up I get in a rut for a song I particularly like and people request that song and then it's branded "MY" song, whether I like it or not. I'm never opposed to people going up and singing what has been dubbed "MY" song, but unfortunately if it's a place I frequent and the regulars like my version there may not be the warmest of receptions. People just like to attach stuff to other people - no away around it.

Personally, people who get miffed when someone else sings "their" song is just immature. Karaoke is designed to be an open forum - people can sing whatever the KJ has and if they do a better job of it, time to find another signature song I guess.

I do have one song that I like to sing often, it's Piano Man by Billy Joel. It's in key of C and fits my vocal range and style well. However, everytime I go singing, I always try to sing songs I have never sung before. Sometimes all the songs are new songs. Of course I find out that some songs are out of my range only after I started singing. Then I made a mental note to bring down or up those songs next time I try it.

At this point I'm still in the early-karaoke-career phase of never singing the same song more than once.  Eventually I'll have done all the songs I can do relatively competently, and then I'll start on the repeats.

ok, not being the most politically correct individual myself, I cant see quitting the site over that, they do tell you quite often that they are monitering the forum. I do personally think that the politically correct movement could easily be replaced by the common sense movement. Then maybe people wouldn't feel they have to qhit things that they seem to enjoy? Oh well, thats the end of my minirant for the day. thanks to all the replyers. talk to yas soon        timbo

I try to do different at least one or two "new" songs every time I to out sometimes I'll even sing all new ones, but sometimes I just want to stick to the comfort zone songs. A few weeks ago, there were a ton of people from work at the bar. I admit, I wanted to make sure I sounded good that night, so I stuck to songs that I knew well, and got to do more interaction with everyone.

I don't have a song that's mine either...  If I did have a song that was "mine", I'd get it copywrited and demand some $$$$.   LOL

If My Heart Had Wings - Faith Hill

I do that one almost everytime I go... it's a good warm-up song for me...

but yeah.... if someone else sang it before I got a chance, I certainly wouldn't throw a fit. That's just ridiculous!

I don't really think about me having "my song".  There are other people that have labeled certain songs as mine and request that I do them.   But I like to do a variety of songs.  In some of our local bars there are people that only do about 4 or less songs all the time so when I see these people....out of courtesy, I don't sing the songs they normally sing.  I've been to places where Karaoke newbies come in and sing and then someone that has more experience will get up later and do the same song......To me...it looks like they are trying to show off.  I hate that.  Since I have a pretty good collection of songs I do..I can usually find one that doesn't step on anyone's toes.

The Peter Principle applies to Karaoke.
The generalized Peter principle states that in evolution systems tend to develop up to the limit of their adaptive competence.

At the bar I go to, they won't let two people do the same song in one night. I think that works out pretty well, so people don't get to show up someone else like in the situation you are talking about a10    timbo
