What are you planning to do?  Sing at home?  Small karaoke parties?  Slowly go professional?

BTW, you don't have to go to a Shure SM-58 to get good sound.  I use Fender P-51's and they're excellent at half the price.  The Shure PG-58 is a pretty decent mic as well and it's only $60 or so.

You can go with a powered mixer, but what speakers are you going to use with them?  That makes a HUGE difference as well.  You can even try going with an inexpensive powered speaker like the JBL Eon G2 10 or similar.

There are a lot of options and if we knew what you were planning to so with the equipment it would help to make recommendations on the direction to head.
