In my younger years I enjoyed singing with several bands at a couple of our local honky tonks. Folks, that was about a hundred years ago or at least that’s what it feels like. Now that I’m older than dirt, last Saturday I found the courage to try singing again at one of my favorite karaoke hangouts. To my surprise, no one threw anything at me, ran for the door or booed. Actually, they all applauded. I chalk this up to their being tone death. But as you can probably guess, I’ll be going back tomorrow night, (Saturday). I’ve been monitoring this forum for awhile and finally joined just the other day. I like the constructive criticism and the manner of respect that the members of this forum apply when evaluating other members. However, after listening to some of the posted vocals I’m wondering if I’ll ever be able to sing. You’re a great bunch. Jackson This message is coming to you from sunny South Padre Island, Texas |

Welcome Jackson. Always good to see a new face, and hear a new voice. I'll have to go see if you've got some songs posted yet. (too old to sing......???....... that just can't happen, ) Not as far as I'm concerned anyhow. I think I'm gonna sing at my own funeral matter of fact. :oh yeah: You're from Texas- cool. Me too, originally- though I've been on the west coast for years & years. (My family is from New Braunfels, TX) Hope to hear you real soon. |

Thanks for the reply - I tried singing again Saturday night and really enjoyed it, I think I'm becoming a Kjunky. Using my computer I recorded myself and it sounded awful. My wife said it sounded good - now I'm worried about her. I'd love to take some voice lessons, but living here makes it harde because everythings over an hour away. I have a lot to learn - just wanted to let you know that I really appriciate your support and great outlook. Jackson |

Jackson, I don't think I've met ten singers (including the rich and famous, not that I've met lots of those) who are satisfied with the sound of their own voice. I can carry a tune, I know that, but I never like to hear myself. I've gotten better, since I kinda have to listen to what I've recorded to know if it's complete, etc.... I taught myself to sing over the years. The hardest thing to teach yourself isn't how to hit the notes (at least for me) It's breathing. Breathing is basically gauging where you can get a breath without messing up the rythym of the song. There is a great site out there called voicelesson.com (prolly a www in front of it that has lots of tips in their free faq. He also has video lessons by mail, but I can't vouch for that as I didn't buy it. I'm cheap. We sing, because we love to sing. Because not singing is just too darn hard! There are some who join contests and the like, but I THINK most of us just love to sing. And we love to hear the others sing. Some even like to hear my hamster sing Welcome to SS and don't be afraid to sub songs. These are good people, I can tell ya being an old timer of about 2 weeks now Teri Jo |

I've been singing karaoke since I was 43. Before that I sang in church choirs and some community choruses. I never liked to sing solo at church. In fact, my singing was occasionally ridiculed for not being loud enough (most choir members tend to shout over other singers to be heard, some don't actually sing). lol I did however audition for a part in Handel's Messiah for a recitative and got the part! I was truly amazed I was chosen, since most soloists from that chorus had vocal training. I did take some voice lessons at age 45 for about six months. In that short time I learned quite a bit and still apply the things I learned to help me manage high notes, etc. I've been singing karaoke now for nine years but most people think I'm a lot younger because of the types of songs I sing. Karaoke can definately make you appear younger. That's probably one reason I love it so much. |

I was reading about some of the constructive criticism offered in the singer’s showcase. I doubt if I’m be able to offer any criticism other than I like your voice or I don’t like your voice. That is unless they are so off key that I notice it. So, how do you offer criticism? I’d appreciate any help on this subject. Such as what to listen for and how to describe it in a manner that makes sense. Thanks Jackson |

Well sometimes the advice is just on mixing.. You can really only say what you feel and /or know. I know I love emotion in a song, so if a song is sung with lots of emotion I am going to love it. That's just me, and everyone already knows that. Mostly I luv everyone . I can say, oh, maybe growl there or something, but see everyone has their own style. Where it sounds good if I growl.. it may not if someone else does it cuz that's not THEM. TJ |

Teri Jo, Thanks for the encouragement. So far I’ve only sang three songs; “Everybody Loves Somebody”, “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”, and Can’t Help Fallin’ In Love.” My next attempt will be, “Silver Wings.” Now I need to see if all the folks over in the Tech Forum will help me figure out how to turn my computer into a recorder. I haven’t been able to sing and play the music at the same time. Thanks for responding to my post. Jackson |

Each and every person started singing once. Each and every person was a newbie to singing, to recording, to stepping on a stage. There are folks out there that forget that they were once "green" (I'm talkin more yer celebrity types, I THINK ). So never be ashamed for not knowing everthin at the start. No One does. Learning is half the fun!!!! Teri Jo |

Connie, speaking of church, for some reason I can not sing most of the songs they play in church. I'm not sure if the key they are playing in or what. I can sing some of the old standards but the new ones they are singing now leaves me in the dark. Just wondering if I'm the only one with this problem. Jackson |

I play drums in a band and have only recently attmempted singing, and that's been via Karoke so far. I find it hard to try and play and sing, but that's currently my ultimate goal - get to where I can play my drums and sing in the band as well. In the meantime while I'm warming up to singin Karaoke, I've started go out on Friday nights to a local bar that has Karaoke every Friday. I first thought I sounded like terrible and then got flustered in the middle of a song. I've gotten over the getting flustered part, now I'm working on learning to sing better. Hopefully I can start playing my drums along with playing/singing karoke at home as my next step. For more on this, I just typed up my introductory "hello I'm here" message a while ago descibing what I'm currently working towards. Good to meet you! |
