I thought this topic would be interesting.  And maybe give some of the KJ's in the forum some ideas on freshening up their act.

For Karoaoke on a Saturday night, my KJ is a funny, irreverent but very likeable guy.  He plays piano and "brings along the Karaoke machine."  He is a dwarf and he must be somewhere in his forties.  He sings and plays piano.  The fewer singers that are there, the more he does his own songs.  He lets me and other people sing songs with him playing the piano...no Karaoke machine.  Sometimes he harmonaizes on a song if he knows it.  He likes to drink a lot and gets fairly raunchy and rowdy by 1:00 AM.

For Karaoke on a Sunday night, my KJ is a fortyish, blond female who wears way-to-short miniskirts.  Ahhhhhh...gotta love it.  She has a following of singers whom she makes wear tee shirts to advertise her business.  If people wear her tee shirts, then when it's their turn to sing, they can sing two songs in a row.  But if isn't very busy, most everyone gets to sing two songs in a row.  She always has some kind of other interesting thing going on with the Karaoke.  Special prizes, mardi gras nights, etc.

Today is Sunday so I think I'll check out the color skirt the blond will be wearing :)

I hate places where people sing 2 sings in a row that is so tacky.

Another place I used to go to for Karaoke has a really great professional-looking stage.  The best part about it was that the monitor/prompter was mounted on the ceiling above the audience.  This makes it easy for singers to keep their eyes toward the audience where they should be.  The place is absolutely packed every Thurday, Friday and Saturday night.

If you are ever in Cincinnati, the place is called Lebo's.

I actually Karaoke Online using a voicechat program.  Sometimes things can get quite interesting.  One room has Themes fore each round.  For instance "Songs with an appliance"

I ran one for a while where it was everyone do the same song.  I took suggestions on what song, of course, for we wanted as many doing one as possible.  That was fun too, and INTERESTING.  I love hearing how different people do the same song.

Why do I Karaoke online, you didn't ask? Well, the drinks are much cheaper, I can pick my venue or move to another without ever starting my car, and I'm not relying on someone else's equipment or song selection LOL

I guess that makes it easier to sing, huh?  Your lungs are closer to your mouth :)

Actually Dave, I am growing quite well, thanks.  I could go out to the clubs, and do the same thing, and spend all kinds of money on soda or whatever, not to mention dealing with annoying drunks.  For my Karaoke, online is much nicer, I can put those people on ignore and not even see them.

My husband and I run a PC support business, so my work gives me more time to be online than perhaps yours does.  As the tech, I go out and fix people's machines when they break, I answer the phone, and I keep the books.  Sometimes I have lots of free times and sometimes (Like after a particularly nasty storm, or a new virus has hit the street) I have little time for anything else.   A lot of PC support is also research, and I do a lot of that online as well.  If say HP's support site helps me, I don't have to sit on hold for a half hour or more to get the same information.

I visit friends, I spend time with my family, I enjoy my life.  I also DO go to the clubs when I'm in a band (I'd kind of have too huh?) and I often go out to see one of my friends' bands.

I appreciate your kind concern, but making assumptions about people rarely works well, in my experience.

Thanks Mr. October for clarifying that my comment to Foxey was a joke.  But perhaps not very funny to her.  I'm short myself, Foxey.

And my head measures 7 3/4 inches around.  I can never find a hat.  I could never be a cowboy :(

And because of my big head, I think my BRAIN is too FAR from my mouth :)

Uhm, Dave...I think you mean you wear a SIZE 7 and 3/4 hat.  If your head were 7 and 3/4 around, we could call you Pinhead Dave! A dollar bill is roughly 6" long.  Roll it in a circle with a 2"gap between the ends and you'll see what I mean.

Wow, I thought I was the only with the big head problem. My hat size is 7 7/8. Anything that goes on my head looks like a Yarmulke (you know, the Jewish skull cap). Not only I can't find a decent hat to wear, like a cowboy hat, but I look funny with a baseball cap. I am so lucky that I have very thick, full set of hair at my age or I would have a dilema.

My hat is off to you Mike.

I am now hanging my head low.

Head-ing for the forum penalty box.

I should have quit while I was a head.

Before I became s block head.

I curse this forum for making me look bad.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!

I have had my hair and what is weird is I always seem to have friends who have their hair too.  I'm finally getting some balding going on so I guess I have to find new people to hang out with.  I may even have to learn to ride a motorcycle, for cryin out loud.

I wear a 7 3/4 or 7 7/8 depending on the make.  I also suffer from a premature balding problem - it started at 16 and considering that I'm well, much older than that it set in with a vengence.  I gave up in November of last year and just shaved the half of my head with hair on it.  For some reason I now look much younger and have even been called (gasp) sexy since then.  My fiance seems to like it anyway!

If I grow out a goatee w/ my moustache I look a little like Goldberg (but with dark hair and more 'fat')

BTW, when I used to drive around with my Miata club I used to wear a bandana and was told by someone in the club that most people can't pull that 'look' off but for some reason they thought I did.  If you're loosing your hair and can pull off the 'bandana look' shave that head - you'll look just fine - especially if you're on a 'hawg'!

Well maybe a bandana.  I'm a computer engineer in a place where I'm the only one wearing jeans and goofy teeshirts, and everybody else is wearing IBM blues.  The bandana wouldn't make me stand out that much more, I guess :)

Seriously, the average guy's nose and ears never stop growing.  And I'm an average guy.  So maybe I shave my head, paste a ruby to my forehead, and pretend I'm an elephant :)

I had a favorite KJ until her husband was transferred out of state. She was the best by far.

She would start the night by singing the first song to break the ice. She would not sing again unless it was a duet for another singer or unless we begged her to. I have been to shows where the KJ thought he or she was the 'star' and sang all night while others waited an hour before even singing one song. Debbie, my favorite KJ always made things fun. She would have kamakazee(sp?) karaoke. This is where she would ask for a volunteer to sing whatever she put in no matter what it was. It was so fun to watch singers flub their way through an unknown song. The singer would then get a free drink or small prize. Debbie also had raffles throughout the night for prizes. If you sang a song the slip was entered in the raffle. Debbie was very fair when it came to customers singing. No one ever felt left out and although she had her regulars she did not favor them over others. (Ever wait to sing a song while the KJ's friends sang two or more each?) The last song of the night was a group song. Anyone that wanted to get up and sing could. I think by having everyone sing that, no one felt like he or she was cheated out of a song.

Another thing I loved about Debbie is her show was all karaoke. I do not like going to 'Karaoke' and listening to the KJ/DJ plays 2-4 songs in between singers. I do not mind too much when a song is played inbetween if there are no singers but I think it is wrong when 20 people are waiting to sing and the KJ is too busy drinking and flirting to do his or her job.

I'm happy when my KJ doesn't get really drunk and start flying CDG's around :)

He heavily favors people who get the crowd rolling.

He heavily favors duets, especially when someone sings with the bar owner.

He heavily favors the bar owner singing.

He will make fun of you if you are messing up a song.

He takes no crap off no drunks.
