Some of my intial thoughts: 1) Don't act like you expect applause. I've been to places where professional bands never get applause. 2) Be proud, but not anal about being a Karaoke singer. 3) Even if you don't smoke, carry around a cigarette and act like you smoke. Any others? |

Oh yeah, 5) Don't wear Karaoke tee shirts or other such nonsense that shows you to be a conformist. |

6) When looking over a song book, sit together with someone of the opposite sex. This is what the lonely regulars really want and they will envy you. Okay I'll stop and let someone else thing of some :) |

I personally hate watching good singers smoke in karaoke bars. I know that's the pot calling the kettle black, since I smoked for 13 years. It's a hard habit to break. But I've been totally cigarette-free for just over 5 years now, and I've experienced an immense difference in my voice since I've quit. I wish there were a way to make good singers see clearly just how badly they're affecting their sound by smoking - not to mention I'd love to be able to go to a karaoke bar and not come home smelling like someone's dirty ashtray. Anyway, go on with your thread. My contribution to improve your image around others would be - sing as best you can, don't argue with the KJ, clap for everyone no matter how bad, and just have fun! I think Dave missed the humor in # 4. MAO!!!! Personally, I like my image just the way it is. I don't need to improve on it (unless you have some really wacky suggestions that would fit my CUEBALL personna). |

No that was kind of the joke. He went from number 3 to number 5 skipping number 4 entirely. |

If I'm not supposed to wear karaoke shirts why did Sound Choice give me two of them when I bought the foundations? |

>Don't stand square-on to the screen. Sing what you know from memory, and just take a quick glance at the screen when needed. Even better if you don't have to use the screen at all. >Use mic technique. Right up close to the mouth and nose for bass notes, and a good 18 inches away for that big crescendo. >Move around. This only needs to be by as little as one yard. >Don't sing with a nervous smile on your face. It ruins the mouth shapes needed for certain sounds. > Don't be afraid to ask the KJ to alter the mix, or the Key. I specifically ask for more reverb on certain 1950's/60's Elvis songs because the original record was like that and so it becomes familiar in the listeners mind. >At home, don't practise with a karaoke screen. Just use a printed lyric sheet and the backing music. This way you'll learn the timing of the record precisely. Then when in the bar, you're just using the screen as a word prompt, and not a timing cue. |

I'll try it for sure. David |

The general message I got from the posts was we should just act as we please. I think that in a lot of places that if the regulars complained about the Karaoke, the barowner would choose his regulars over the Karaoke singers. So I still believe we need to make sure we are pleasing them. One KJ I know goes to great lengths to do this. And I'm a performer first, singer second. I see no problem with my entire presence at a club being 100% performance. And maybe some of the really good singers in this group can expect applause. I have to console myself by remembering that there are bands that play in bars that do not get applause. :-David |

Here's what I've discovered in my 5+ years attending karaoke shows: You become a "regular" at one particular place (or several), and you're jumbled in with all the other "regulars"... you get the cordial, clap-clap from everyone. If someone new comes into the bar and has never heard you before, you might get some whoops and hollers from them and they may even come to your table and say something to you about your performance. Most of the time though, you're just one of the many. I've noticed that when you sing something so completely obscure or fresh on the charts that some people have yet to hear the original, most regulars aren't that interested. Guess you gotta stick with the familiar more. I don't because I don't really care. I'm singing because it's my turn, and maybe someone will hear something they like and get interested in the original. Some people have asked me "hey, who sings that?" or "what song was that?" and I gladly tell 'em. If you're looking to gain admiration from your fellow karaokers, spice things up by going someplace you've never been before. Fresh face, fresh voice... and you might actually get more than the cordial clap-clap. If that's what you're going for, anyway. I'm pretty bored with all the places I've been going lately. Same ol' same ol'... everyone sings the same stuff over and over and it's the same line up every weekend (with the occasional smattering of a new voice here and there.) I think I'll give karaoke a rest for a while and see if any of that changes. |

Yeah that's certainly the negative spin on it. I experience similar things. |
