I think I have a damn good sounding setup and just wanted to see what other pro karaoke KJs are using out there. PS, I play in a medium-sized venue to about 50-75 peeps.

Here's my current setup:

Yamaha EMX88S Powered Mixer (400 stereo watts x2 w/effects)
JVC 303 Triple Disk CDG player
BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer
Yamaha S115V Club Series Speakers x2 (Main Cabs)
Yamaha BR12M monitor speaker
Shure SM58 mics
Creative Nomad Zen Extra 30GB MP3 player for filler music
19" ACER LCD video monitor

Here is my current wishlist:

Numark CDN25G dual disk CDG player
Yamaha MG16/6FX Mixer
Yamaha P5000S power amp (2600 watts bridge)
Samson Servo 260 (to run my monitor separately)

What is everyone else going with these days??

Nice mixer.  I've loved mine for 5 years, now is needing to be replaced - need more channels.
Your amp replacement RSQ or QSC did you mean?  Also strongly take a look at Carvin DCM series amps - very good!!

Lonman,
Yes you are correct I did mean QSC. Brain needs replacement but havent found one yet.... LMAO

I have also been looking at the Carvin DCM line of amps also. A great friend and felow KJ came to our show last night who also uses a CFX12 and gave me some assistance on setting it up. Like night and day, sounds great. I did remove my eq from the main inserts. Maybe I will put it back in for the next show and see if I can tweak it more.

Between our good friend and you here on KS, I have learned quite a bit about what equip to be using and it have greatly effected my choices of what I am buying.

Thanks for the help

Steve,

I saw another post of yours that said you work a good bit of the Atlanta subburbs...last time I was in the ATL, I sang at a multi-rig show at SweetWater Cafe in Lawrenceville, GA. Was that one of yours??

The KJs were a guy and a girl in thier mid 20s.

Just wondering!!

No, that was Bob Gilbert's outfit.... Bob's karaoke... Bob and his wife are very nice folks, but he hired some real doozies as Kj's..... :)

Sadly Bob, who is a local karaoke legend, and one of the oldest Kj's around here, is very ill with cancer now, one of his Kj's stepped up and took over the remaining few shows they have now, to help them out... Bob was always a class act.

As fo sweetwater, I never cared for the sound there, and the KJ's are very tip heavy.... not my style....

but it continues to be a popular show...

look me up if you're ever in The ATL.

-Steve

The way your set-up looks is that you have the same selection per system.  That would be near impossible if you aren't multi-rigging (do you have a disc for every system?) unless you have been buying discs from the beginning in the anticipation of having all the systems you are stating.

Steve,

My brother lives within waking distance of that place, which is the reason I get over there. I think the karaoke there is a bit lacking myself, but the bar is a great bar since I'm a darts and pool nut. Add in that we know the barstaff there and get freebees, and it's a winner!!

As for the tipping, I agree that I personally think it is tacky. Before I started working as a KJ a little over a year ago, I was always turned off by the KJs shamelessly pimping for tips over the mic all night, so when I started I decided that I would not accept tips. There was even this one that would ask for tips AFTER EVERY SONG, saying that she was saving for breast implants. 3 years later, no implants....very dissapointing..lol.

Mind you, if someone offers me a $20 to bump up 5 spots, I'm probably going to do it, but I never ask for tips and if someone wants to tip me just for doing a good job (which happens more than those that want something in return, luckily enough) I just tell them they can get me a drink or we can do a shot together if they would like. That is much more personal than cash and helps build relationships. Plus, why should they tip me, I'm getting paid very well already!! I don't tip the chick at the Wal-Mart register for ringing me up or the accountant for helping with my taxes!!

I don't tip the gal at Wal-Mart, but I've often times tipped the guy at the gas station when I buy a Coke on the way home from the bar.  About the time I get in my car, I think "Did I just tip that guy for my Coke?".  Habit, I guess.   LOL
