Oh ma gosh- you don't know who David Allan Coe is ?  He's pretty awesome, you should go look him up and listen to some of this stuff. If you like hardcore southern boy country music, you'd like him.  UNLESS..... you don't like country, then you for sure wont like him.  His most famous song I think was "The Perfect Country & Western Song"......... you have most likely heard that one, it's sang by a drunken cowboy just about every time I go karaoke. lol

It's called, "You Never Even Called Me By My Name"

It's also known as, "The Perfect Country & Western Song," and "The Greatest Country & Western Song Ever Written"

Lol- I DID not know where you were from.  So, seeing that you're not from the states, you actually may not like him after all.

I'm from the south- I do like his music, well- most of it. Some of it was, uh- tacky to say the least. But he had some good stuff out there too. Kind of a "Charlie Daniels" type guy.

Good singer, I always thought, but he never got too big.

It is called by a few different names...... he wrote it as "You Never Even Call Me By My Name"......... then he added the infamous last verse and it became "The Perfect Country & Western Song". It's actually named on the cd that way. But you're right, outdoorplaces, it's been called both- and more.

Haha...........andiandgaz, I've met people like YOU before. You're not pulling me in to that.

We all like what we like, and no amount of someone running country music down will change MY opinion of it, haha.

No apology needed, I don't feel belittled in the least.

And I don't consider the type of music I like to be a weakness, you shouldn't with yours either. That's too bad. You think country is bad music- well, I like country music, but my true love of music is bluegrass. So have a hey day with that one. (or do you know what that is....??)  It's just a bit more hillbilly than country music.

And, I use to listen to Duran Duran too.  Still could, there just not my one of my favorites.

(Phil.......... tell ya what, I don't need any more debt, so ..... charge it to the dust & let the rain settle it, 'k? lol)

For the non-country music people, 'Take this job and shove it' is a David Allen Coe song that was performed by Johnny Paycheck.  Even if you don't like CW music you have at least heard this song most of the time.

He's a singer/songwriter, who's known for writig 'edgy' music.  A number of his songs have become pretty big hits and a few are just hilarious, like his 'Jimmy Buffett don't live in Key West anymore'.

And for the record, David Allen Coe did not write "The Perfect Country and Western Song," Steve Goodman did, then David Allen Coe wrote and added the final verse heard in his version and renamed the song "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" for his release.

Steve Goodman has also written quite a few other country hits for bands like Arlo Guthrie (his biggest hit, City of New Orleans), the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Prine, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, John Denver, Willie Nelson, Tricia Yearwood, Jimmy Buffett, and, of course, David Allen Coe. Steve Goodman was also one of Buffett's studio and live guitarists in the 80s and early 90s.

His biggest solo hits were "Queen of the Road," the female take on "King of the Road" and "A Dying Fan's Last Request" which is an ode to Chicago Cubs fans (like me :) )

Some chick even sang that song at my show the other night...I didn't even know I had it!!!

David Allen Coe wrote a #1 hit for Tanya Tucker called "Would You Lay With Me (In A Field Of Stone)?" And reached #2 in the country charts in 1984 with "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile." He wrote "Take This Job and Shove It" in 1978 but it did not become a hit until Johnny Paycheck covered it in 1981.  David Allen Coe can currently be found as a collberator and lyricist for Kid Rock.

 To quote the website and Tyler Coe.... "Constantly reinventing himself so as not to become pigeon-holed in any one category, David has presented himself to us as an ex-con, a bluesman, a rapper, a magician, a biker, a gypsy, a (Mysterious Rhinestone) cowboy, but most importantly, a song-writer. Arriving in Nashville with nothing but a guitar and a handful of blues songs about what it's really like to be in prison, to striving for individuality in what was quickly becoming (and eventually became) Nashville Inc., to touring the country non-stop while occassionally releasing live albums, David Allan Coe has stayed the same in one respect... He just does whatever the hell he wants to do, man."

He has been accused of being racist and ignorant but his lyrics are raw, unique, and  sometimes just silly.  He has written songs about love, life, prison, men, and women. Just the titles of some will tell you what he represents.... "(@$%&#!) Whipped Again", "Cocaine Carolina", "I Hate my Wife", "Suicide", Penitentary Blues", "She's a waitress, She's a Lady" and hundreds more... All hail trailer trash!  :worship:

And to set  the record straight... Roger Miller wrote King of the Road and the parody was Queen of the House written by  Glenn Sutton for Jody Miller.

He wrote lots of songs that would be shockingly fun karaoke songs but not many to be found on CD+g format.

Post subject:  Re: who the piggin hell is david allen coe?

Let's make this as easy as possible.  This is taken from the David Allen Coe Website.

Born September 6th 1939 in Akron, Ohio, USA. From the age of nine, Coe was in and out of reform schools, correction centers and prisons. According to his publicity handout, he spent time on Death Row after killing a fellow inmate who demanded oral sex. When Rolling Stone magazine questioned this, Coe responded with a song, 'I'd Like To Kick The (@$%&#!) Out Of You'. Whatever the truth of the matter, Coe was paroled in 1967 and took his songs about prison life to Shelby Singleton who released two albums on his SSS label. Coe wrote Tanya Tucker's 1974 US country number 1, 'Would You Lay With Me (In A Field Of Stone)?'. He took to calling himself Davey Coe - the Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy, performing in a mask, and driving a hearse. He satirized the themes of country music with hilarious additions to Steve Goodman's 'You Never Even Called Me By My Name', but has often used the clich÷Ÿhimself. His defiant stance and love of motorbikes, multiple tattoos and ultra-long hair made him a natural 'Nashville outlaw', which he wrote about in the self-glorifying 'Longhaired Redneck' and 'Willie, Waylon And Me'. In 1978   Johnny Paycheck had a US country number 1 with Coe's 'Take This Job And Shove It', which inspired a film of the same title in 1981, and Coe's own successes included the witty 'Divers Do It Deeper' (1978), 'Jack Daniels If You Please' (1979), 'Now I Lay Me Down To Cheat' (1982), 'The Ride' (1983), which conjures up a meeting between Coe and Hank Williams, and 'Mona Lisa's Lost Her Smile' (1984), which reached number 2 on the US country charts, his highest position as a performer. Recordings with other performers include 'Don't Cry Darlin'' and 'This Bottle (In My Hand)' with George Jones, 'I've Already Cheated On You' with Willie Nelson, and 'Get A Little Dirt On Your Hands' with Bill Anderson. Coe's 1978 album Human Emotions was about his divorce - one side being 'Happy Side' and the other 'Su-I-side'. The controversial cover of Texas Moon shows the bare backsides of his band and crew, and he has also released two mail-order albums of explicit songs, Nothing Sacred and Underground. Coe appears incapable of separating the good from the ridiculous and his albums are erratic. At his best, he is a sensitive, intelligent writer. Similarly, his stage performances with his Tennessee Hat Band differ wildly in length and quality: sometimes it is non-stop music, sometimes it features conjuring tricks. Coe's main trick, however, is to remain successful, as country music fans grow exasperated with his over-the-top publicity. He may still be an outlaw but as Waylon Jennings remarks in 'Living Legends', that only means double-parking on Music Row.
