Ok, I finally got the system together and tried to put it all together and I am getting a strange delay on the vocal. I have not idea why it's happening. It's about one second delay from microphone to the speakers. Here is the set up. I have the microphones connected to dbx 166XL directly. From there, the output of the dbx is connected to first two channels of Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro. I also have the CD-G player on channel 6. From there, I have the aux/return of Mackie to Alesis Midiverb 4. The output from Mackie goes to my JBL Powered speakers. It seems the delay goes away when I turn off the Alesis unit. Everything else seems to work fine. Any idea what could be causing the delay? Also, do I have the devices hooked up in right sequence? Can anyone give suggestions? Thanks so much in advance. |

Well your Alesis is a multi effect processor which includes delay - so that is most likely your culprit, especially since you said it goes away when you turn it off. Sounds like you are returning too much of the effect. Run the input on the Alesis about 12:00 oclock, run the mix & output wide open. Turn the aux send on the channel strip to about 9 oclock & the aux return to around 11 oclock. This is a base setting, but should put the effect under the vocals. Adjust accordingly from there if you want more or less. Also your mixer has inserts, this is where your compressor should be hooked up. Only run the mic direct through the compressor if your mixer doesn't have the inserts. |

Finally did some experiments and it was the DBX unit. I disconnect it and the delay went away. Now, I need to find out why and where the DBX unit will fit in. Thanks for the advice. |

The dbx isn't a delay unit so I don't understand why it would give a delay effect. The settings must have been set too high. As to where it will fit in, as I stated in my other reply to you, it will connect via the "insert" jacks on the mic channels. |

The delay in an audio proc or even a video proc is negligiblle however if you were running the insert mode like Lonman suggests I would be curious as to what happens if you run the left music channel thru the compressor... |

Yeah, I was puzzled about this as well. I took out the DBX unit based on a suggestion by my friend who is a professional musician and dealt with these kind of stuff before. It was strange. What I had was the mics connected to the inputs XLR inputs of the DBX. From DBX I connected the 1/4" outputs to the 1/4" input of the first two channels on the Mackie. I had a third mic connected directly to the XLR input of the Mackie as well. From Mackie, I used send/return to and from Alesis Midiverb 4 for effects. The effects were coming through but the strange delay of about 1 second was there. What's even more weird is that the third channel on Mackie, just a straight mic to the mixer was delayed as well. When I pulled out the 1/4" cables from the DBX to the mixer and used the 3rd channel mic, everything came back normal without delay with the effects. So, that's what I have right now, DBX is not even connected. I am thinking that I put the DBX unit after the send/return so the music/vocal all can be limited. I have played around with all the knobs on DBX and the mixer and the delay still stayed. I didn't spend a lot of time on it but will do it coming week. Thanks all for the suggestions. I will give them a thorough run through and post the results. |

You used the XLR input AND 1/4" output? Possible cause right there. Use the XLR in & out if you use that method, however a compressor should be hooked up through the insert jack on the mic channels. You are only going to be able to compress 2 mics (obviously) because the dbx is a 2 channel unit. |
