You could say throughout the states, there's maybe a handful (if lucky).  Not very common here & the ones that I did hear about got shut down due to illegal activity within.  Most people like to sing in front of an audience not to a few people in a room, this can be done at home.

In New York City, there are several places that have Karaoke Booths. For whatever reasons, they seem to be popular amongst many people. Personally, I prefer to sing in front of an audience. If I want to sing in front of a small group of friends, I can just invite them to my house and we can sing to our heart's content (on my home system). I don't need to pay by the hour for it.

I'm curious about what it is like doing Karaoke in Japan.  Are songs in English? etc?

Most of the karaoke boxes/boothes/ktvs are where the asians are (chinatown area).  They ususally have multi language songs.

There are  many English karaoke  songs produced in Japan that have  bi-lingual lyric; English and Japanese. In general English songs are sang commonly in most Asian Karaoke clubs.
