I'm shopping new bottom end for house rig...I've got a pair of 18" Kappas but wanting to upgrade. I'm considering the Peavey DJS 18" subs or one of their SP218's.

The DJS is one 18 in a folded horn cab, the SP218 is dual frontloaded 18's. I either buy 2 DJS or one SP218.

I'm concerned most with which works best with pre-recorded playback materials, not live band programs.

Which do you think is voiced best for highly compressed pre-recorded bass heavy hot dance material?

The DJS systems are designed more heavily toward DJ use.  The folded horn subs generally produce more of the sub harmonics that dance music require but for karaoke is a little much.  
I have used the SP118 & SP218 in the past for live & dj - not the current models out, but they are pretty much the same except for exterior design - either one would be a great choice for dance music as well provided you have the power to push them.  
You may consider 2 SP118 as well.  With the 218, you'd really want to get a good high power amp of approx 2400 watts bridged to make full use of it as it's RMS handling is 1200 watts.  The SP118 handle 600 watts RMS so even though a high power amp is still recommended to get the full use, it only needs to push 1200 watts per channel - again for maximum efficiency.
With the DJS system, you are pretty much limited to dj, the SP system can be used for either.  Whichever system you decide, a good electronic crossover of some sort  will make a huge difference.

I've got both the excellent VSX-II and the CSX-1 crossovers so I'm covered there. The VSX-II is fully adjustable where the CSX-1 is fixed @150 Hz. Either can go 2 or three way.

Amp power is no problem, I always believe in too much amp, especially for bass. I ain't never fried a driver except a pair of EV passive cab crossovers when I attempted to run full range off a little 150 watt/channel powered mixer....The EV woofers stole all my headroom and the horns crossover released their magic smoke....EV fixed them free tho and suggested I buy more amp, which I did. That was my first rig learning curve thang....Since then it's been too much amp, passive crossovers, and an eye on gain structure. Now a days I can crank to unity thru the board all the way to the amps and never light a DDT or clip LED.

Once again, I'm looking for the best voiced sub when used with hot dance DJ music for the house...We don't that much karaoke here, mostly dance party stuff. The rig gets rolled outside at times, so I need really good bass coverage.

Well if it's mostly dj work, the folded horn will appear to be louder with a little lesser power - although I still would push the maximum wattage it could handle.  The sub bass that it will produce will sound deeper (even though this is really an illusion for the most part).  I have never used a folded horn outside so I can't say how they will work.

My very limited experience with folded horn subs is that they will project farther outside cause they tend to be a little more directional...As always tho, they need to be placed against a back wall for highest SPL's. So the folded design wins when outside as they can reach out as far as my tops maybe...I've got great SPL's from the tops out to !00 feet, but presently bass suffers out beyond 30 feet when outside.

I'm still concerned with voicing...Which provides best bass with pre-recorded materials.

I would guess the folded horn - simply because of the illusion factor.  They will seem louder & deeper.  Not as tight or accurate however - unless you get a REALLY good box tuned exactly right.

Yeah........

I love you Lonman, no joke, but you n me are running in circles on this one.

I'm asking who here might have experience with both the DJS and the newest SP218. Which actually does a better job or reproducing DJ stuff.

I guess I didn't actually state that I have tried the DJS sub (great for dj use not karaoke as they are too bassy for that) & used the SP118 & 218 (although again, they were the model directly preceding the current model - which really aren't that much different except for exterior design) great for both - provided the power supply is more than adequate.  

But no I have not used the current model SP series as of yet so I couldn't say how they perform, but I doubt they are going to sound that much different than the previous model.

Trouble is, the newest SP218 is loaded with Peavey's lastest bass Woofer, the Pro Rider, which is just one step below their ultimate Low Rider sub driver(23lb magnet)....It was designed by Mike Bush and he is the guy who seems responsible for Peavey's concert class QW series enclosures.....

I'm thinking they were close sounding before cause they both used Peavey Black Widows, but the new SP218 has those new Mike Bush Pro Rider drivers....Where as the DJS still use good old Black Widows.

Still, one has gotta be best for DJ material. I'm thinking the Pro Rider might be a little stiff.

I'll see if I can reach Mike and see what he has to say.
