What happens at your gigs when you take a break and pop in hot dance music?

Post subject:  What happens at your gigs when you take a break and pop in hot dance music?
Does the dance floor fill up and the bartender get really busy?

I've noticed the gals fill the dance floor and they guys rush the bar to buy drinks when I DJ hot dance stuff....The singers wait it out and dig in the songbooks.

How do you guys determine how to keep both the singers and dancers  happy?....What kinda mix to you offer that kinda crowd?

The club owner is watching just the register.....He's in business to sell drinks.

I'm not hired to play dance breaks.  It's in my contract if I do play one, it will be at my discretion.  It all depneds on how many singers I have for the night.  If I have time for a dance set, i'll do it - it will usually be a line dance type break like the Electric Slide or Cha Cha Slide, etc... no more than 2 songs.  However on the plus side of that is oddly enough most of the requests I get are FROM the singers to do these songs.  If I get enough requests, I will!

What's a break?  I'm not familiar with that term....

I do occasionally play dance music, but only if requested and it's usually only a song or two.  Again, line dance club songs are the main fair... but between singers I usually play trance or other electronic music at a lower volume than karaoke to keep the energy level up.

Only time I play dance music is when it is requested and put up into the rotation. The last time we played is a dance song was a few months ago.

Depends on the crowd.. In a well established karaoke bar there are three basic types that overlap, but participate, give energy back to the singers and are part of the total package. Singers, dancers and listeners. A good host has a repoire with all three. When a singer has a full dance floor the energy is at it's highest and whether the crowd is watching the dancers or singer they are enjoying it. We dont play dance sets per se but if the dance floor is full with every song and you see your next singer on the dance floor out of breath holding hands with his girl friend i will kick in old rock or something. If the dancers remain I'll play most of the song If most sit down I'll fade out and call the singer up. We rarely play the slide or a dance via request but never had a complaint if we did.

We will be doing an outside gig out at the farm today and it wont be anything like a normal show Dj Kj and people putting in their own songs.. The kids will hog the mics for awhile at the adults will let them and enjoy it. If somebody sings 2 in a row nobody wil even hardly notice. (Dont do it at the bar) Maybe that is why after doing these parties for years my shows arent as formal and with systems now one can shift format or gears on a dime. The question  is "is everybody having fun?" I have said this before .. The crowd determines mainly what the format should be. Next rotation might be totally different and require a formal and rigid style..

At all of my karaoke gigs I do 60% karaoke and 40% music. Some nights more karaoke but try to keep it no more that 75% / 25%. Goal is to keep everyone in the bar not just singers, a few singers just scare people away.

I play in a sportsbar for about 100 people nightly, mostly in their early 20s. I keep an MP3 player full of the latest top 40 pop, rap, and R&B that I refresh monthly. I play these songs as filler but will let it go depending on how the crowd reacts when the beat drops on each song. If there is a bigger rotation (15+), I'll usually just play until the next singer gets up, which seems to be about 30-45 seconds most of the time because it is a big bar and is almost always full.

I do save my best dance songs for when I have to use the restroom :) and for the end of the night when even the karaoke peeps are toasty and seem to get more into the filler music!!

It is also key to play really upbeat filler after someone sings one of those wonderful balads that no one seems to like except the one who sang it (you all know the ones!!)

Break? Surely you jest.  Karaoke only, no DJ/dance music, you get that during the karaoke.
