Is there a list anywhere of the best songs to sing to get things moving?  Maybe a list for guys to sing and one for girls to sing?  A couple of my better number that would fall into this category are "Jack and Diane" and "I Wanna Talk About Me," but I'd like to find a list of songs that really gets people into the music.

I'm sure it just depends on the place.  I wouldn't expect something like "Summer Wind" to ever get the crowd excited, but some crowds get excited by banal country tunes and just stare blankly at the Rolling Stones or (my personal favorite) swing numbers like "Jump, Jive and Wail."  You just have to know your crowd.

Wanna get 'em moving----sing BRICKHOUSE, Zoot Suit Riot or Play That Funky Music White Boy. Those will get 'em up moving around. Also Baby Got Back or Humpty Dance.

You're absolutely right about that.  I was just hoping that I ight find something like an "America's Top 20 Karaoke House Favorites" list for each genre of music.  A list for Country,  one for Rock,  one for Pop, and Maybe even one for Urban.  Now that I think of it, I wonder if either PHM or THM have a list like this.  If not, then if we all got together, I bet this site could come up with something exactly like this.  Hmmmmm...

a well-sung song of nearly any classification will perk up a room. I have a reg that just NAILS Creedence Clearwater Revival... he can sing ALL their stuff. he's very energetic, and people love to watch him.

Steeley Dan's "Do It Again" is an old favorite of mine.
Nickelback's "Never Again"
Bob Seger tunes... well ANY old classic tune of his with an upbeat tempo!... but stay away from the ballad hell that can trap you with "Turn The Page"! It's a good song, and I can sing it well. Most of the time, it's with a sense of relief when it's sang.
Meatloaf songs, but be wary of "Paradise By The Dashboard Light"... it's been WAyyyy overdone in most circles!
High energy Redneck songs! "T.R.O.U.B.L.E." comes immediately to mind.

Songs that advocate drinking!

"Tequila" is fun (and only two words spoken! LOL!), as it gets everyone up and moving around. The fun people do the Pee Wee Herman dance! LOL! If you have to ask what that is, you haven't seen the movie, nor seen how RIDICULOUSLY hilarious it is!

Just put your mind back to when you would toe tap to the radio, sing along, you and your pals would get excited to hear a song on the radio... a specific song!

Matt

Is Tequila ACTUALLY out on a karaoke disc?  Someone was asking about that the other night but I said probably not because of the lack of lyric content - then I remembered Sound CHoice put out Alley Cat - NO lyrics.  Have one guy that goes up every once in awhile & does that one.  He just stands there & looks as if he's going to start singing when you'd think words would start, he takes a breath, points the mic to his mouth - then looks around until the next time you'd think words would actually start.  Does this through the entire song - it's actually pretty funny to watch.  Some joke to him that it's the best song he does.

I would imagine you wouldn't need a karaoke version of Tequila... just play the original song... nobody would notice  :drunk: and I'm sure it would be beter than a karaoke version anyway! However I have seen it on DKKaraoke.

Matt "Do It Again" and "Turn The Page"?? You are a lucky man in a boring location.

WAKE UP PEOPLE TO SONGS SUCH AS: "Born To Be Alive" Patrick Hernandez,
New York New York, "Groove Is In The Heart","Born To Be Wild", "Electric Slide".

LOL Jimmy,

I'm saying that "Turn the Page" wouldn't be the thing to use! No Ballads.

as for "Do It Again", the music really does make a lot of people sit up and go "Ohhh!"

and of course, I sing it very well! ((shines fingernails on jacket))

Am I the only one that thinks if I NEVER hear the "Electric Slide" or "Strokin' one more &%#$ time, it will be a blessing?   I frequent two karaoke bars and I must admit to hitting bar "one" less than "two" because of the "Slide" and "Strokin" renditions.....   Two vapid mindless pieces of musical feces that are best flushed from existance....

I must disagree about this.  I've done strokin' and get an awesome crowd response.  Admittedly, I do a pretty good job of it and change the words from 'Clarence Carter' to 'Mr. Ed' in one part of the song to make it more personal.  I only sing it once a night, and only if it hasn't already been sung.

Getting a room sit up and take notice can happen with any well sung song.  Just tonight I was around a small wall from some patrons and closed the night with 'What a wonderful world'.  Nearly everyone in the place was dancing and one lady turned to her husband and said I love this song, I wonder where he got the cd, and when he told her I was singing she had to come around the corner to check!

Admittedly, it is what the crowd wants to hear at the venue.  But think about wedding receptions and what most of the people instantly get up to dance to.

Nearly any funk will put them on the dance floor...
Brick House
Super Freak
SuperFly
Flashlight
and the list goes on.

Some rap will draw them out, especially older rap tunes provided they're not too long.  I sometimes do rapper's delight, and the dance floor is packed.  By the time 7 minutes rolls around though over half have given up and gone back to their seats.
Baby Got Back
Ice Ice Baby (now THIS song is mindless musical drivel that should be banned from the planet!)
No Sleep 'til Brooklyn
Fight for your right to party
Rapper's Delight (the 5 minute Singing Machine version might be short enough - or cut it early on the SC disc before the dance floor empties again)
Gin and Juice
Regulators
Bust a Move
Humpty Dance
Too Legit to Quit
Lots of others here as well...

Country...
I try to avoid country because I don't care for most of the 'modern' country music.. but the old favorites will pack a dance floor if done even half way well.
Friends in low places
Crazy
Boot Scootin' Boogie (puh-lease remove this one from my memory!)
Nearly any Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, David Allen Coe, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, George Strait and a number of other artists will pack a dance floor in a country venue.  It's something about these artists and two-steppin'/slow dancin' that just packs a dance floor and can drive a country crowd crazy!

The trick is to size up the venue, and know what will draw them out.  I've done a song one week and pack a dance floor with wild crazy applause when I'm done.  I can sing it even better a week later and get ignored.  Especially with swing, rap, and slower songs.  Watch the response of the crowd to other songs and see what's getting them pumped up.  If you don't see them responding try talking to a couple people and see if they want to hear something in particular.  You might be surprised and find that there are a number of people that want to hear something you can either sing, or sing something similar.

Did I misinterpret Marty’s original question?  Most of you replied with what songs will get the crowd up and dancing.  I, on the other hand, am thinking of songs that will get the ball rolling, singer wise, early in the evening, slow night or whatever. I would think an upbeat song from any genre depending on the crowd.  I keep a list of songs I think I do well and pick and choose from that, hopefully to get things started. Songs that most anybody knows and would be singing along with such as Jimmy Buffett – Margaretaville, or David Allen Coe – You never Called Me By My Name.  Some older country like Hank Williams or newer country like Travis Tritt or Toby Kieth works for me sometimes.  Take your pick of oldies or classic rock, as long as most of the people will recognize it and be sitting in their seat singing along. Just my $.02 worth

Whether its the start of the night or halfway thru a rotation of ballad hell any well sung upbeat song will "perk things up"  You have to know your crowd - rap and rock might work someplace but not others and the same for country.  Popular songs that are recognizable to the majority of patrons will do well better than obscure ones no matter how well they are sung.  Is there a "list" ..not going to find one that fits all markets and all venues and the suggestions so far have been excellant.  I use to have someone sing " I will survive" every night and it got overplayed ...Now it usually doesn't get sung so when somebody sings it the women go nuts...GO FIGURE!  Same with SWEET CAROLINE or some ELVIS numbers.
Variety is the KEY to keep things moving and unfortunately very hard to control in a Karaoke enviroment.  ( Unless you throw yourself in the rotation to spark things up)
or run some "special rotations" where you ask everyone to pick a certain genre of song - DISCO - RAP - ROCK  etc.

If I get a rotation with a ton of ballads in it, I always use my turn to bust out "What I Like About You" by the Romantics "I Hate Everything About You" by Ugly Kid Joe, or "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" by the GA Satellites...those always get everyone back into the groove!!!
