Being new here, I've been exploring all the forums and threads and find myself feeling very left out......

I WANT TO SUB!!!   I feel like an absolute IDIOT because as a singer and KJ, I've never done it or heard of it before!

I've downloaded Audacity as well as KRISTAL, but was more confused after downloading them than I was before!  I have a brand new laptop that burns CDs, DVDs, and has tons of media capabilities......and I also have a very high-tech, new-aged Professional Karaoke system, with mixer board, CAVS, DJ Disc player, amp, speakers, mics....etc.

Would anyone be interested in scheduling a bit of their time to maybe take me step-by-step through what I need to do?!!!!

...In a nutshell you want to eventually produce a .mp3 file (mysong.mp3). Don't upload a wave or other format type file. And you'll have restrictions on the file size depending on your membership.

I don't know anything about Karaoke machines. I just record my guitar, synth, and vocal into three tracks on a digital recorder, load the files into my computer, then drag the files into Audition mix screen, then mix together to form the final mix (combination of all files), then "save as" a mp3 file.

Hope this tidbit helps a little at least.

I use a mac... it is an ibook. All i do, is sing into my laptop's built in microphone, with headphones on, while recording with "Gargeband" , music playing in the headphones... add a little reverb or something, Then, I mix the tracks, into itunes, and then convert it to an .mp3 that is under 3 mb (membership restrictions). Lol, basically, if ya use a mac, I can give ya a step by step walkthrough, and lotsa help.... otherwise...err... ummm...- buy a mac;) Yeah, aren't I a big help?  I HAVE used the mac version of audacisty before... so, I can probably give ya a hand, etc.. if you still haven't figured it out, I am always around, and am happy to lend a hand... oops, sorry, there is ketchup on that hand, here take the other...

The very simplist way to 'sub' (Unless you have a built-in mic like Gilly does heheh) is to plug your mic into your soundcard (there should be a little plug somewhere on your laptop with a microphone symbol), start up some recording software, find the 'RECORD' button (wherever it is, shouldn't be hard to find), press RECORD and say some stuff to test your mic out, make sure you're actually recording.

If you're lucky, this will work. If you're not lucky, you will have to tweak around with your settings until you make the software understand where the sound is coming from.

Finally, 'save' your file as an .mp3 (as gilly said, make sure the end result file is small enough to suit your membership requirements).

More than likely, your recording software has 'tracks' available. If so, you can load your background music into one track, then 'record' your vocals on another as you sing along.

Most of the people here, as you've discovered, record right into their pc. Me, I have a karaoke machine like you.  I record on the karaoke machine (it has a dual tape deck), then I record from there onto the pc.  You need a cable (very cheap) from Radio Shack to record from the output on your karaoke machine or stereo into your pc.  Then you record using your software (I use a shareware program called Goldwave) and save that as an MP3 file.  You can add effects as needed.

I, like you,  use a karaoke machine.  (JVC 3 drawer) and a 12"  tv for my graphics.  I prefer to use a karaoke machine, because it lets you skip many steps in the recording process which will confuse you alot when you are first trying to learn this...( You can learn the more confusing parts later once you get the hang of what you are doing ) It also lets you raise or drop keys at will (if your karaoke machine is so equipped) ...Because singing them in a comfortable key is only good sense...

I am not on a laptop but a regular pc.  I don't know much about laptops, but will happily  tell you how I do this, and between us all you can gather the info you need...*NOTE, there are several methods so sort out the way you think will work for you...

My karaoke machine is hooked to my pc, liine in into the sound card ... ***** After hooking up properly and before you record you have to go to task bar and double click the lil sound icon,  then go to properties, then recording, and change the recording function there to " LINE IN "*****....I have my mic (Sennheiser) and my headphones plugged into my karaoke machine.  

I bring up my recording program on screen (I use Cool Edit Pro 2.0)  Most here use cool edit or audition (basically same) click file, then new, then hit record...After you sing your song turn off record, then you can use whatever effects are available to edit your song to your taste.  [THAT'S A WHOLE OTHER LONG UNENDING LESSON]  Cool Edit and Audition are very well equipped..  Then save it as an mp3 (if that is possible with your recording software) or if not, then save it as a wav.. There are many shareware programs that will allow you to convert a wav file to an mp3.  Mp3's are what we are posting.  The size of the mp3 file does matter and will change according to whether you save it at 94, 120, 160,  192, or whatever  kbps..

There are alot of little things that are real important, like volume levels, etc.  But you can work on all that once you get hooked up so that you are able to record....One step at a time.  It is easy to become overwhelmed looking at all this when you are just beginning..Ask questions as you go...Help is all around you here..

If any of your plugs don't fit where you need to plug em head to radio shack.  They sell many adapters and can also explain even demonstrate how to hook up.  

I remember when I first began I was just  so lost...I know just how ya feel...Best of luck to you.  You will find people here to be very helpful as most of us remember what it was like when we started..

Obviously, your  best help will come from someone using the same things as yourself ie. I know nothing about the programs you mentioned, but have become pretty familiar with what I am using.  You can pick up Cool Edit pro 2.0 on ebay for cheap these days....

As I said I know nothing much about laptops either, but if you have a regular computer also, I would just set myself up there permanentely because I warn you these singing sites are rather addicting and you will more than likely be recording often and plugging and unplugging gets to be a pain...A good set of speakers is important for your editing so you can hear qualities and nuances that you don't hear on standard lil pc speakers..

Laptops are no different then your normal desktop computer... Lol.  most things are the same, simply more compact (less space to install things, and i suppose less ports, etc).... program wise.. it IS the same:) Whatever os you are running on it, is the same as your regular computer... so.. you DO know all ya need to know about laptops... Lol.

(Besides, My desktop computers are "all in ones".... meaning, there is no seperate tower and monitor... which, is basically no different than a laptop... (imac, emac, etc)except, I can use my laptop anywhere, and my emac is a lot heavier to carry into the bathroom.. (oops.. bathroom?:) )

Anyways... good points Connie:) It is amazing how everyone records so differently, and your setup sounds terrific in your recordings:)
