Help me I'm trying to start a portable souvenir recording business using Karaoke backing tracks. Any suggestions as to good quality cd sets to get me started? Also any legal things I should be made aware of as I am very much a newbie in this field. Will be operating in Nova Scotia Canada if that's any help. |

I'll leave the rest to the experts but I do know this, if you are going to use Karaoke tracks for the backing of these recordings, then you will need to get permission from each of the songs you are going to record AND you will, most likely, have to pay royalties for each time you finish a recording on a different person. That, in it self can be WAY expensive. But, good luck to you and I hope you can make a go of it. |

That is a VERY expensive field to get into (legal way is expensive....some are less scrupelous though). The best in my eyes is sound choice, but they are also the most expensive for licensing..... |

Basically you're wanting to start a karaoke booth business or variation thereof. Licensing for this sort of business isn't cheap - something on the order of $125-$150 PER TRACK is the norm. If you can afford to keep a large stock on hand there are other ways to do this that are cheaper per track, but again, you'd have to stock a large number of discs or be prepared to sell your existing discs. There are a few other ways to try and do this but none of them are cheap. If you want to go ahead with this I recommend you talk with the manufacturers to see how expensive the licensing is and how to go about doing this legally. |

Thanks for eveyones input so far. As expected I am getting conflicting info here in canada from what I'm getting from south of the border. I have been sent a few concrete leads and names to drop and numbers to call. Will keep you posted how it turns out. I know there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there running Karaoke and other performing ventures BUT I want my gig to last so that's why I'm dottin the t's and crossin my i's |

The laws are very different north of the border - east of the border for me (I'm in Alaska). As I said, contact the manufacturers and also an attorney in your country that is knowledgable in Intellectual property and copyright law. If they understand licensing and contract law it would be beneficial with your business models and projecting legal ways to persue it. |
