Post subject:  Can you burn CDGs with a regular CD burner?

I've been looking into backing up all my songs and using them for my gigs instead of the originals.  This way if one or all gets stolen I can just burn another one.  The first question is would this be legal to do?  The second question would be if I could do it with a regular CD burner?

Thanks

I'm not certain of the legalities, bee... I'm sure you can find that information here in the technical section of the forums though.  Lots of really good info on this site.

However, I DO know that regular CD burners DON'T copy CD+Gs.  They do copy them, but your results would merely be just the music.  If you're wanting the on-screen lyrics, you'll need a burner that can read the subcode.  Plextor burners have worked best for me.

There ARE ways to do it, but I would highly recommend against it. Remember, ANY bit errors, and it shows in the graphics...

Break down, get a $50 plextor burner (you can even get a $35 usb case and put it in that if you don't want to hack into your computer case! LOL!)...

Trust me, you'll thank me in the future. FAR less headaches just to get the right equipment!

You Can, I do it all the time, Use nero burning rom and you burn the image using the cue file in the same folder as the bins. Even burned at 48x with no problems.

Hmm, I've got Nero also, so I might have to try that with my regular burner that doesn't read the .cdg subcode and see what happens.  Would be great if that works too.

EDIT -- Well, I tried it.  It took 12 minutes just to copy the image file to hard drive, another 8 minutes to burn to disc, and then only 52% of the way through it gave me an error and popped the disc out of the drive.  Just to see what might have actually copied, I placed the disc in my karaoke machine... and it did have on-screen lyrics, but they were all over the place and the music was scratchy and it sounded like 15 cats fighting underneath a blanket.

I'll go back to my normal way.  Oh well, was worth a shot regardless.

Not sure what you did, I use mp3toolz to take my zipped files to make the bin.
Then I open up nero burning rom and then file, Open. Then select file type image files, nrg, iso cue. Then select the cue file in the folder where the bin files are and it should burn with no problems.

Sounds like you copied a cd image to your hard drive then burned it, I take the mp3g format and convert to bin. If you want to select songs on certain cdgs, convert rip them using a cdg ripper and convert to mp3g or just move to a folder as a bin, then when you have all the songs create a cue file using mp3gtoolz and burn with nero. Or go back to your old way :)

If you ever have problems with aspi, this is the way to go, that and I dont have to take my portable plextor wherever i go.

If you are trying to just duplicate cdg, then a duplicater is the way to go.

Good Luck

I use mp3toolz as well, but only for coverting mp3s and cdg files to bin.  The program I use to make custom discs reads the .bin file, and I can put them in any order.  That program also rips right from a disc to the hard drive in either .cdg or .bin format.  Has never given me a problem, and writes at 52x.  Yep, I think I'll just stick with that.

But thanks for giving ideas on another way if something ever happens to my burner :)

Depends on the burner as well.  I've seen a few burners that weren't recognized by certain programs to be able to read/write cdg's, however other programs worked fine.  I have an HP DVD burner that none of my MTU products nor CDRWIN will recognize, but is one of my best burners with CLone CD for cdg's as that program recognizes it as a cdg compatible burner even though none of the others do.

If it's a new model Plextor, they may not have the drivers yet to make it go as they only get them as fast as the company releases them.  The majority of Plextor drives work with MTU among other CDG programs.

The question is not if you are wasting your time with the MTU products, but if you have read their information regarding the supported drives before you bought a MTU product. Here's a link to their list of compatible CD drives

Try Power CD+G Burner at http://www.powerkaraoke.com/src/prod_powercdgburner.php. It works on most drives that support DAO96 mode.
