Post subject:  Video Subs...

Hi:

I was just wondering. Would anybody like the idea of sub-ing videos of your performances? After all, internet tech has already reached the point where this is possible, if a little unmanageable, to already do this (file sizes, resolution, formats, etc. being current stumbling blocks). But it won't be long before video subs will be just as convenient as songs. Anybody up for it? :D

LOL Well Crystal, that sounds like me the first time I got in front of a croud. Thought I'd try somthing simple like a slow Sinatra. Sure, simple. I quickly found out the more subtle the song the more it takes to do it right. But after a while, it became a thrill.

Any other takers?

I asked about this a while ago...reply was not enough bandwidth...an mpeg of me singing one of my usually short songs is 96 meg...never mind a regular length song

yeah and can ya imagine all the people on 56K dial up trying ot upload a 30-60MB video file only to have the file crap out with 1MB to go before being uploaded and having to start over? LOL not ot mention all the videos of people in their homes singing LOL trust me, you don't wanna see what I am wearing when I record at home LOL... and I dunno how much fun it would be to watch a video of someone tanked outta their mind at a bar making the neihgborhood dogs howl and bats fly into walls... on second thought... BRING ON THE VIDEOS!!!!

Seriously though, the bandwidth issue and storage of those video files on karakescene servers would be astronomical and expensive for the average singer and member... eventually technology will allow the compression of video files to be comparable to music files without a huge loss in quality, but for right now that goal is still beyond the reach of most... keep on singing- tig

You might want to think of getting a group together to sing live online with net cams, instead...easier on the bandwidth.  You can do this on Yahoo, Paltalk, Camera Cafe, and other places.  The only problem is getting people to agree on a time...
I used to host live online karaoke on Camera Cafe last summer (I was helping out a friend who was running the company for a while).  It was a lot of fun, when we could get enough people to do it.  The only problem was there were a few jerks there who just liked to come in and cause trouble or say obscene things.  There are ways to keep the trolls out but they could just sign up with another screen name and come back.  But really the MAIN problem was not having enough people who were interested in doing it on a regular basis.  Camera Cafe started dying off so...not enough people.  But I know there are a few Yahoo groups where they get together for live karaoke (and actually anyone can set up a group to do so) and I have been on Paltalk a few times for live karaoke and it is really fun.  You don't have to have a net cam, either, you can just do audio for people who don't have the camera.
Anyway, something to think about...personally I have no regular video camera so I couldn't make a good video recording.  But I am game for live karaoke.

Hey, I think that might be kinda entertaining, Tig.  Oh nevermind... Mind going elsewhere.

I'm thinking about the average time it takes for someone to sub a song in the first place.  Take into consideration how critical some people are of their own performances and how long it takes them to perfect their recorded sub before they submit it to the SS.  Jeez, I can't even imagine how long it would take someone to submit a VIDEO performance...

Personally, I don't want to see myself singing on video, let alone have anyone else watch me.  It's amazing in itself that I even get up on stage at karaoke.  I have been filmed at karaoke contests before.  I will not watch them.  I'm entirely too critical.  I'd probably never get on stage again if I knew what I really looked like while singing.

You might want to just videotape yourself at home singing...it's very helpful.  I did that a few years back and found that I have sort of a blank expression when I sing, so I try to smile more now when I am on stage.  They use video when you take education classes in college, too, so you can see how you look when you teach.  It's helpful to see what you look like so you can work on making it better (if need be), just the same way that it's helpful to record yourself on audio so you can improve that part of it.

Post subject:  Re: Video Subs...

I know that I NEVER smile when I sing... unless it's during the instrumental breaks.  I find it hard to smile and concentrate on forming the notes correctly.  Unless it's a really easy song.  I took a couple of required speech classes in college where we had to videotape ourselves, take them home and then critique our performance.  I don't have a problem smiling while TALKING, only when I sing.  But at least I try to smile during the breaks.  That is, if it's a happy-sounding song.  If it's a ballad or something not-so upbeat, I tend to keep the same expression on my face the whole time.

I close my eyes a lot when I sing.  I do this both at home and on stage.  I'm kind of animated too (lots of use of my hands) unless I am using the microphone stand.  It's hard to just stand there.  I tried it.  It doesn't work for me.  I feel silly

Hey, being animated is better than just standing there like a statue :)

Here is the trick to working on all those secondary things like smling, standing, etc.  You learn the song backwards and forwards.  Memorize it, know it inside and out.  Figure out where you are taking a breath and always do it in the same place.  That way you don't have to think about the singing, and you can then work on other stuff like facial expressions, putting feeling into the song, how you stand, how you move, etc.

I understand this is a lot of work for karaoke, though :) I'm just passing on what they taught me years ago in voice lessons. I'm not saying I do that all the time, either.  But I know that it's a lot easier to work on that stuf with songs I have sung a million times in karaoke than something I just learned.

Definitely a lot of work for karaoke, haha.  Especially considering 90% of the people there aren't paying a lick of attention to me on stage anyway.  LOL  I know I don't always watch the person on stage either.  But I do listen.  Kinda hard to avoid, you know?  Well, unless someone's yapping your ear off.

I think we just officially hi-jacked the thread.  LOL sorry, chrismm.

Well, unless someone else wants to pay for a high-bandwidth site, don't think the thread can go much further anyway!

I work on my singing for me, not for the audience. I want to be in a band sometime,  for fun, if I can ever get the musicians together.  But I think most audience members do appreciate it when you put on a good performance, rather than just sing (depends on the bar though, you are right in that many places they are too busy talking, shooting pool, etc. to bother to pay attention). I don't have very good stage presence but I try to work on it.

Post subject:  Re: Video Subs...

I also work on my singing for me.  If I'm going to be on stage in front of people, I would prefer that I sound OK to MYSELF.  I too would like to be in a band someday.  Never had the inclination to sing solo... but would definitely like to work with a group.  Something about it has always appealed to me.

I have some stage presence.  I appear to be singing to the sky a lot, lol.  I lift my head upward frequently.  Not sure why, really, as it produces no greater effect.  Just something I do, I suppose.  I use the free hand that is not holding the mic to move along with the music.  I even dance a little, depending on the song.  I stopped doing the free-hand thing a while back because I noticed not a lot of other people were doing it and I thought maybe I looked funny.  But recently I've had it pointed out to me that many on-stage singers are very dull to watch as they just stand there, grasping the microphone in its stand for dear life.  So I've started doing it again since well, I'm the only one up there, it's the song I chose, so I am going to enjoy it even if no one else does

Ha ha ha ha ha, wait, wait, I'm still laughing at all the comments. Ok, more composed. Russ and Tig, you're right that tech isn't there yet. But, man, what a show it would be.  I went over the line with my karaoke singing and video taped almost every time I went. I also taped other singers and made DVD's for them. Needless to say I have some very interesting performances on tape. I know I can get most of the people to agree to post their video. But, I know for now it's just a thought of what could be.

slanoue and Debauchery, I'd like to let you know that every person I made a video for was absolutely thrilled to have it. That includes excellent singers as well as those that were just having a good time. And, when I look at my own videos, no matter if I'm animated or just standing there, if the singing performance is up to par, the audience always responds. When I look at the truly great singers like Fitzgerald or Sinatra, I notice something similar. When a singer is devoted to the performance, less is more, especially when singing a ballad. But, even with an upbeat tune, the great singers are concentrated on the vocal presentation while allowing themselves to enjoy the music. I've found that as long as I present the best singing performance I can and sing for my own enjoyment, others will enjoy it along with me, even when I hit the occasional creative note. Bye the way, don't worry about hijacking the thread, I find this topic an interesting side-bar.

Say Melly, how about video taping only from the neck up in candle light. Nothing to see, nothing to hide.  LOL
