Question for you all.
Here is my dilemma.
Before I started frequenting SS, I have a style or a couple of styles down, but once I started submitting songs I got addicted ot it, I need to find more time to recorded, then running low on cdg’s I needed more, so I spent more money buying them, then I realized my microphone was crap, so I spent money for a good one.  Then I thought, well shoot no matter how good the mic is, if the mix doesn’t sound good, then what’s the point, so I bought a good mixer program.  Then I though well what if I want to add some subtle effects, so I purchased an effects package to go with the mixing software.  Then it made my really old CDg’s sound bad, so I upgraded them, but then the new mixing software made the little off nuances be a lot more apparent in my voice, so I bought another really, really good mic.  Then I found that my computer was not up to par for the multi tasking I needed to do, so I upgraded it, then I realized it would be nice to be able to read the words on the screen for some songs that I don’t know really well, so I bought a computer karaoke program.

So I guess my question is, do you feel your styles have changed for the better or worse now that you joined SS.
I know my pocket book needs a band-aid for sure.

P.S. here is a picture of my new setup

The track lighting doesn't really do that rack setup service,  You need to upgrade that;  and the room the equipment is in,  Needs some acoustic panels on the walls, which are too close together,  you really need a larger house !

<hehe>

On a more serious note,   If you have the money, there's nothing wrong with treating yourself to new toys.  If you knew how much money I've poured into guitars, amps, synths, etc.  You'd realize there are many of us out there like you.

WOWZA *drools*.. that's pretty darn incredible.  I'm so jealous lol.  You would surely have a good laugh on my account if you saw my setup lol.  I'm in a small corner of my dining room in my little apartment right next to my sliding glass door to the patio.  My table for my puter stuff is smashed right up against the back of my sofa lol.  I got just my computer and my mic, and an old little mixer that sits on my dining room table which I run my mic through.. That looks like a Sweeeet setup.  I know who to go visit now! :) hehe

Holy Moses that's a sweet lookin' setup man. I actually have the same thing as Crystal, Tascam us-122, and a pg-58. Can I come over and Play?

Currently I have no means of recording or playing into a computer except for a cheap computer microphone. Does the Tascam US-122 work with Windows XP ?  I've heard that it doesn't.  Mac, and other windows versions perhaps. Any idea's for usb hardware that would enable me to put guitar, keyboards, etc into a computer ?
Not sure what Audigy is, yet I've heard about that as well..  This is an area I know nothing about.  I just want a simple means of playing into a computer.

OK, OK, I have a confession to make, the picture you see is not mine,  wish it was but alas, it was a joke, I thought someone would have figured it out by now. :drunk:  <--- yea that’s it I was drunk at the time, ummm with Morgan Fairchild we were making babies, yea, that’s the ticket.
Actually I have a nice setup but that not it; and its ALL computer based.

In any case, here is what I have really.
a really nice fast computer, (although that is not necessary), a really good Shure microphone, plugged into my creative labs Audigy II Platinum sound card.

I have a windows Karaoke ripper and player.
The ripper is a free one called audiograbber, it pulls the music AND the lyrics from the CD and makes two files on the computer.
I have it set up to make an .MP3 back round track and a .CDG Lyrics file.

To play them I have a shareware program called "Karawin".
IT is free to try and it really, really works well.
You can adjust the pitch up and down +/- 20, without effecting the tempo.
You can change the tempo of the music without effecting the pitch.
You can add reverb, echo a small but effective equalizer.
Anyway it's packed full of features.  I liked it so much I sent the author some bucks for it. It really is worth it.

Then I have Acoustica Mixcraft mixing software for recording as well as Cool Edit Pro.
I like Adobe Audition, but not for the price they are asking, it's ridiculous.

Mixcraft is very simple to work, sometimes too simple, then I use cool Edit Pro to finish it off.

What I normally do is one of two things.
If I don't know the song as well as I should, timing pitch etc, I record it in Acoustica Mixcraft adjusting the mic to music mix a few times, then record the song onto one track using Karawin to play the lyrics.
If I know a song well enough or have learned it enough, I record it onto two separate tracks.  This way I can adjust the volume, EQ, reverb and so forth of the music and the vocals individually.
If it is a final draft, I run the song through Cool Edit Pro and tweak it with some of their really nice effects; they have a killer EQ setup.
So that’s pretty much it, any questions? Any answers???

If you think this country's screwed up now, just wait till I get through with it (Groucho Marx).

Wow, JAWS...need a roommate?  LOL

I've not invested much of anything since joining the SS and subbing more.  I get backings (usually) from friends or just use the ones I already had (which I take to live karaoke occasionally if there's a particular song I want to sing and they don't have it.)

My home 'studio' is not much of anything... it's a headset mic and my laptop with Adobe Audition.  And generally my laptop, though connected to a port replicator, sits on my futon or my desk.  I sit next to it with my little headset mic attached, and just sing away.  Whoopie...

Ohh looking at your picture, I would love to have you as a room mate .... hang on a sec ... My Wife said no, dang her anyway, she's always been that way, fuuny how some things bother her. :)

Ya know what though? if that setup works for you, then cool.  Actually, when I started all I had was a little computer microphone and it actually worked.
So, I know it does not take a million dollar setup to make a decent recording.

Dang the wife... oh well.  Hey, you could always say you're hosting an exchange student.  Um, even though I'm not foreign or really young enough to be an exchange student... lol, need a nanny?

I'd love to have a setup like yours, though.  However, something tells me that if I did, I'd probably never leave the house.  So it's good for me that I don't LOL

If I win the lottery one of these days, I already have the money spent.  I'd build a home studio.  But for now, headset mic and laptop will have to do....

Yes Steven, the us-122 works with xp, that's what I have. Mine actually came bundled with Cubasis and tascam gigastudio, but I haven't figured out how to work those yet, so I'm just using audacity for the time being, the device itself is pretty easy to figure out.

Holy cow - now THAT is a setup!

I submitted my first song just two days ago, and I'm already planning a new sound card and microphone purchase...

But did it really change me? Probably - I already adore going out for karaoke, and now I'm almost as excited about just sitting at my own computer singing for no one. :)
