This was the first weekend I walked into a friends gig (very very close friend) handed him a 512 MB usb flash drive with new songs I wanted to sing. He played the songs directly from the flash drive with winamp. It is one handy little unit and it isnt too far off where singers will be using those versus cd's. (Its no bigger than a house key)

However here is the question...  Sandisk comes with a demo version of Cruzerlock which encrypts selected folders or files..  The upgrade with all the options is about $60.
The KJ would have read only and could not copy or steal or change contents..  Although  it would be worth it has anybody used this or found any software that is less expensive that would have all the encryption options?

The 512 and 1 gig are fairly reasonable now $50 to $60  but the 4 gigs are still  over $500 They are one neat little stocking stuffer tho..

I have used this option for quite some time... I also have a  30GB Video Jukebox from NHJ (about 500 bucks) but it also has a USB connection
( http://www.nhjapan.com/english/index.html ) I can plug into any PC.  It also allows me to plug the audio into any mixing board.  I just had this conversation with Knightshow yesterday about the use of the USB flash memory which is exceeding 1GB in capacity now.  even the smaller drives- 64MB, 128MB etc are more than capable of holding a normal singers song selections for the night.  A karaoke show with a basic USB hub can utilize these new tools... glad to see someone else arrive in the 21st century... - tig

Actually, the new minidisc HD is pretty sweet too.  There are units under $300 now and the discs are under $10, holding 1GB of data per disc.

You could bring in your HD MD, plug it into the USB port and play your songs for the night directly from the player.  Pull the data disc out and listen to music on your way home.

You could even offer a conversion process to your customers.  They purchase the disc and you convert the tracks and put them on minidisc for them.  They just bring in the data minidisc later.

Please note that the standard minidiscs will also hold data in the new HD players.  Something to the tune of about 330 MB's or so and are available for about $1 each in quantity.  Also note that the standard players you find for about $100-150 do NOT handle data.  There was a minidisc data player a number of years ago but the formats are incompatible.

I'm adding a minidisc player ot my setup for playback and recording of my shows for marketing.  I can have a potential customer listen to a show to hear me in action.  I can also use it to better my skills at doing a show.  BTW, as long as I don't distribute or play it as on hold music I should be ok with this legally.

Ok, so perhaps the minidisc isn't as small as the USB devices, but I think the versatility could make up for it.  Add in the low cost of the discs themselves and it might be a winner.

Yeah, just imagine:

You go to your favorite show with your handy dandy kit.

If they're computerized, you hand them your usb flash memory.
If they are still running on discs, you hand them your copied media. If they don't accept that, you pack it all up and go to a show that will! LOL!

Just saw that Fry's (outpost.com) has a 1GB USB Flash Drive for $69.99!!

Considering that you could put 100-200 mp3gs on a single 700mb cdR, the thought of all those target songs on one device... absolutely incredible!
