I have always run a rotation that a) I have never locked but just let it start the next rotation on its own and b) added new singers to the bottom of the rotation. I am now testing out a new software on the market that throws that out the window. As soon as I choose to lock the rotation, the next new singer who signs up goes to the top of the next rotation and every new singer after that gets inserted every other singer in the next rotation. Now I'm not sure if I don't lock the rotation whether or not I can continue the way I have been doing it and if so I will not bother locking the rotation.

Can you clarify what you mean by "lock the rotation" and have you ever thought about placing the new singer "before" the current singer? By placing the new singer before the current singer the new singer will have to wait the entire rotation before singing their first song.

It basically blocks adding new singers to the current rotation if it's a long rotation. The placement before the current singer is not an option the new software has at its disposal. I never liked that feature in OpenKJ.

Leaving now time for managing the sound. No thanks. You must be a set and forget type host.

I manage whether working alone or partner, I dont like the PC handling my rotation, though the best I have seen is Karma and Compuhost, they both have bits I like or dislike, but they do a good job!

I would rather have the PC manage the rotation. It gives me a reason to turn down the I got to leave can you move me up the rotation crowd. I just tell them that I can't just move you up my computer tells me when you get up and I can't change it.

i use slips of paper for sign ups to karaoke. that said, i do my rotations by 'feel' sometimes. yes, i try to maintain a strict rotation. but if i feel i can get away with putting someone here or there, i will.

you know, folks out there will argue about rotations. but every show is different. to me, every show has it's own pace, it's own sound, it's own aura, it's own vibe. so for me and my shows, it 'works' if i just throw in someone outta nowhere even if it's not adhering to the strict rotation. like, i'll get someone come up and say, 'sir i gotta leave, take me out the rotation.' i'll be like, would it help if i put you up next? they'll think about it and say ok. i'll be like, bet; you're next, stand right here. my show has that type of vibe where i can do that and get away with it. and i stand by 100% by all my rotation shifting. yes, i know we shouldn't ever ever ever mess with the rotation. but nowadays, after hearing that stated for years, i forget to ask everyone: what's the vibe of your show? because maybe there are shows our there that can shift the rotation and still be respected and fun and everything else. some shows can pivot.

i see and hear all the time folks argue about the rotation. but really isn't the answer laying on the show itself? what kind of show do you have? if you run a strict show, is it like pigeon-hole-ing yourself to have to have a strict rotation, no? but if you run a karaoke show that's still respectful but folks are aware anything can happen, you can have a looser rotation and get away with it?

i don't pick favorites. i'm not talkative so i don't rub elbows with regulars or non-regulars. i go by how i feel is a good spot to put in a new singer, sometimes. where does it make sense to put them? but it all depends on your show; do you have a quick rotation?

i often think being a KJ is like being a quarterback of a football team. and putting a new singer in the rotation is like changing the play. can you still chang the play at the last second and still run a good play?
