Do any of you ever get discouraged from submitting songs because you feel as though you have put in quite a bit of effort into a song and it gets very few views? How do you feel when you submit a song and it gets less than 10 views (so far I've had 3)? Do you start second guessing yourself as to thinking that you really suck as a singer? I was just wondering what you guys think.

I was just about to start a thread concerning subbers who don't get many comments. Besides being a musician, I have two other jobs, and a pretty hectic schedule. Still my wife and I spend several hours a day posting here and talking to our friends. That means this is one of our favorite places on a huge net, and among those posts we go to the new subs and rank and comment.

Yesterday I looked at the sheer number of subs and thought - no way can I listen to all of these and comment and still post and chat with friends and etc. So occasionally I will click on a few total unknowns to me and sample their subs. I am totally guilty of having favorite singers like (don't feel left out .. this is not a complete list) Crystal, Gilly, Debauch, (a bunch of guy singers - you know who you are) Kayla,Milo,LadyDi,KuntryG,Luly,Melly,Big Red,Shotgun,Shareaoke,NewDay... and about a dozen more at least.

So do the numbers.

Also, a lot of the KS semi-addicts are pretty picky and not prime fluffers. So if we listen to a sub and it is comment only, that means we can't critique it. My comments to friends are sometimes praise but never fluff. I will try to pick out something good on a semi-decent sub, and once in a great while, something decent on a bad sub.

This morning I look at the list of subs, combined with the last few days, and unless you have many many hours, chances are, if you are a newbie, only the reception hi there friendly people will comment on your sub.

A few users like Gilly and Crystal and Syber have come right out and told people - I would like to be a better singer and would like some honest comments. If you are strong enough for this, possible kisses and hisses, you will get more comments.

Keep trying. And DEFINITELY comment on other peoples subs. It is a reality that people appreciate you taking the time to listen to their subs and often will come back and listen to you. That doesn't mean you can post your way into major comments, because if they don't really enjoy your sub, even if you gush over theirs, things will trail off.

AND

we have a multi-genre group here. I am not a country music person. Especially old country. I respect talent in any form, but I am not inclined to check out all the country subs - unless I happened to drift into one, like KuntryG and was very impressed.

BAD SUBS

more than you ever wanted to know huh? Unless it is just for the hell of it, try to do stuff that fits your voice. There are artists I can shine on and artists I cannot do at all. Sometimes I just don't care and sub them anyway. But you don't have to be a clone of the singer, yet people will be quick to leap in and tell you when you CAN do a certain artist. Pay attention to that. We all want to be unique, but in finding your voice, you will be more successful in doing the type of vocals that you do best.

I can honesty tell you that even if a person has little vocal talent, there has got to be at least one famous singer who he can sound like, even if you have to resort to spoken songs like Battle of New Orleans because you cannot carry a tune - at all.

So, that's been my experience. On some songs I get 2 or 3 comments at first and it kinda stays that way. Look at your comment rating for how much you post. Makes a difference.

A few interesting concepts have been kicked around regarding this very issue.

Notice how the people that receive the MOST comments:

1- Comment on many other submissions
2-participate in the forums, and get to know others here
3- REPLY to comments left
4-Are the most liked (sad perhaps, yet true)

I hate to say this, yet there is an element of politics that goes on, and there is give and take (You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours). Some people have a knack for displaying their warmth with just their reply, others need to go further and really participate in the forums.

Most importantly, express an interest in others, and they will reciprocate, Also submit in the critique/Rank area, Seems people enjoy feeling there's an interactive relationship transpiring

Be patient, people don't warm up to others overnight. This takes some time. At a glance it appears that the ones the get the most submissions are the warm people here, people others feel are approachable. the ones that reach out to others, Personality type has ALOT to do with this. Psychology is involved

It's clearly been stated, the number one way to kill interest in your submission (for instance) is displaying any aspect of arrogance, or not caring what others really think (despite phrasing in your description , people can tell who's genuine) If people just want to listen to (to even the best) vocals, they can put a CD or tape on.

Just my observation.

PS.. ALWAYS important, have a sense of humor, be able to laugh at yourself.... This just works somehow <shrug>

I agree with MissyGG that Steven pretty much covered it. JVJ brought up a good point too, sometimes it is song selection too.

There have been some songs that are subbed that I don't particularly care for but if they are people that comment on my subs or that I have heard before and know their voice, then I will go and listen. And I know some of my friends here do the same ~ they don't like country but will listen and leave me a comment when I sub a country song (well -- I think they listen LOL - maybe they just leave me a comment  )

Be patient. It will get better. I see you have been part of SS before under a different name. It also takes awhile for people to realize that you are back under a new name.

Incidently NOTHING wrong with 7-10 views if you are relatively unknown in here. 10 is doing quite well.

forgive me father for i have dial up......
this is my biggest problem..it takes me 20 minutes at least to dl a whole song and my computer draggs while it does so i cant get nothin else done...i want to hear all the songs soooooooo bad i cant tell you....and as far as soliciting, yes it does happen but i get a pretty high comment count and i, certainly due to time constraints, dont get around to all of the people on my sub...so all the people on my subs, i gotta look at as good friends and not solicitors cause they all know theres a good chance i wont be commenting on their stuff ...i feel really bad too....but that is why i dont get around much....but today i am looking forward to doing as much as i can !! oh cool i just found my nail clippers on the floor.....gotta go !!

Dummy Oops I mean DumbDrums (Ha Ha) has a valid point there as well. I don't know how many of you have dial up (Sounds like a poll is going to be started ;)) but that can be a big detrement (sp?) - where is that dang spell check? - Oh I haven't installed it yet - Oops! - Nevermind me my mind is mush!

Since there is a vast number of submittors and so many submissions having the time to listen to them all can be rather difficult. I agree with the points made above, also.

Getting to know others here can really help boost your views(listens) as well as comments.

People do have their favorites and with some of the modifications that I am working on this will become even more apparent - but oh well hang in there. It does take awhile to get everyone to listen.

Sorry for my ramble - I am being Gilly ;) any way I hope the info above helps...

Phill

good lord! another gilly! I really don't think we can handle that...

Last night was the first chance I've been able to really sit down and listen to subs...and there's just not enough time to listen to all that I want to. I'm trying though....there were so many great subs ... I feel like I'm really missing out on a lot!!

There are some people that even though I only comment on a few of their songs, I always download them so I can listen to them later...it's better than listening to the radio!! :D

Hang in there Phoenix!!

I'm with Missy on this one... Steven's got the right idea.

I don't sub very often. In fact, only twice, but I've come to really enjoy conversing with people here. When I first joined this site, I started posting in the forums way before I even considered submitting a song simply because I was interested in the whole interactive aspect of this site. There are many "submit your song" websites out there, but I've found this one to be the best BY FAR. There are a lot of really great people here for you to get to know. A lot of them offer good advice, "listen" to you ramble when you just need an ear (or eye, rather ;) ) and some of them can just completely crack you up when you least expect it.

I wouldn't let a lack of views on your subs discourage you at all. If anything, it should encourage you to do it more often! I'd consider posting more in the forums and yapping with various people. That way, when people see more of your posts, they become more interested in seeing what you have submitted.

lol, it is almost like being your own agent/manager, to get noticed, you have to promote yourself, and the best way to do that is to listen to others and comment on there songs. i haven't had the time lately to get listening done or chatting done, but i have met alot of great people here, and i try to when i have the time hear all my friends and listen to a whole lot of new people i have never listened to before, usually that is my saturdays, and alot of people here return the favor and come and listen to me, but it doesn't bug me anymore that i don't get many views, i for one understand you just can't listen to everybody, i am happy if i get one comment.lol

initially, the idea behind tons of people listening is hypnotic... you think you're going to suddenly have tons of new friends and listeners...

The reality of the situation is you're a number on a page and you're fighting for recognition. If you're lucky, the type of song submitted, your talent, and your ability to mix the submissions well enough might garner some attention. But that won't last if you don't recipricate in kind to your fellow subbers.

We had a thread a while back that spoke about the sheer odds of listening to thirty subs, and being good about that... so that all thirty of those people might, theoretically be able to come and check out your stuff.

But the odds are not in your favor of that happening. The average song is 3-6 mins in length. mulitply that by 30 times, and you can figure how much time it'll take you to listen to people. That's assuming you have a fast connection. DSL and cable are good, but even then you might have quirks in your system.

TEN is about average for a well known song, and well known "original" artist.

Unfortunately, with as busy as the site has been, friends will tend to stick to friends. This is unavoidable... society has created these "conditions", and the best we can do is hope to make new friends... but remember, you have to be THEIR friend too.

I know I TRY to go and listen to a sub by someone that comments on mine... best of luck to ya

Sniff, Sniff... guess Crystal won't be listening to me anymore. No, WAIT! I take that back. I do sing some Martina... but only certain ones. I leave the high note ones for you. ;)

I agree with all of the above... but you have an extra tough time because of your classical genre.... it is definitely an acquired taste... and a tough sell .... I know that is your love, so I'm not saying to change... I'm just saying it's not YOU... it's the type of music you have chosen. It's quite an accomplishment and an art to study and master... so stick to your guns and keep posting... you've already proven your love and dedication for the art by not compromising on it and selling out to a more popular genre... good for you! Don't be discouraged... just enjoy the company when they do arrive.

Rising_Phoenix, forgive me for being blunt, yet I just reviewed your past 11 submissions. Given your genre of music, and your pretty poor reply history. Consider yourself lucky for even getting 10 to 13 listeners still.

If you warm up to people, they will go out've their way to listen to a genre they normally don't listen to, (or to be honest in the case of some of us even like at all). If you appear as if you don't care whether they listen or not. Which up until your posting in here was the case. People won't bother.

You really need to extend yourself more. You should reply MUCH more than you do. acknowledge those, that take the time to acknowledge you.

Hope this helps.

Fortuneately the problem here is quite easy to see, and also remedy. (Posting your question was a great first step)

Yes, being friendly and open has a HUGE part to do with it. Although the large number of comments I get indicate that you guys like my subs, I've also always made it a point to try to listen to everyone, or at least to as many as possible, and thus have established many friendships and acquaintances. It's definitely a give and take situation.

When I first came here I didn't know anybody. My criteria for listening was first to listen to songs I liked, then to listen to songs that only had a few comments, then to listen to the rest if I had time. I admit, I'm much more likely to listen to somebody again (even if it's a genre I don't like) if they reply to my comments. I also tend to listen to people who comment on my songs, but I don't always make a specific point of it.

I'm one of the very lucky ones. My kids are all big....and by the time 10am rolls around....Im done homeschooling and the day is mine. I listen Thru out the whole day....and i have super fast cable this year....TG i got that BEFORE i found this place.

I love to listen to everyone.....and in between doing house work and other stuff......i usually catch up on everyone by....{looking at clock} about 10PM!! but i love it.....the different voices, song picks, genres....but i do agree with everyone above....get to know people.....and yes....if someone comments on your song and takes the TIME to do so....i would rather have a comment back than a listen. No doubt about it.....if you have time constraints or dial up.....ugh......there is NO way you can get to everyone.....Heck....takes me 12 hours! LOL.....BUT THIS SITE is far better to me than radio.....and if i MISS someone....i always go back and look.....Everyone has seen my....."PLAYING CATCH UP" on thier subs....lol...This place rocks.....and it rocks because of Phil's hard work and all the warm and kind people here.......So, just stick to it....it will happen ......it WILL!! ...... :D
