I am adept at singing but know nothing about recording...example: I have a Voco Pro entertainer Karaoke machine that records like a 1970's tape recorder ..Just take a listen to my subs on the Singer's Showcase and you'll see what I mean!
So what can I start with that will give me that clear recording sound..is there a mixer ( I think that's what it's called- DUH) that one can record right on to a CD, for example...
I am not very familiar with technical turns so if anyone can explain to me in layman's terms I would appreciate it..
Thanks,

WHat I started out using until last weekend was:
My Singing Machine karaoke machine connected via RCA ables to my
computer sound card which is connected via USB to my laptop
Then I had been using Audacity, but I changed to Audition.
Now I'm using
Singing Machine connected to my Behringer UB802 mixer
Mic connected to my mixer in separate line in
Mixer connected to my sound card
sound card connected USB to my laptop
I still am recording everything as one track instead of rippin the song to my computer and then recording vocals as a separate track. It never matches up both tracks when I do that and takes me hours of work to get it even close so I gave up for now and will just do everything one track. I can rip to my computer and record "what I hear" which would be the backing and my vocals at the same time. Still one track.
Don't know if that will help or not...

Connect Peavey Mixer to line in on computer, recording onto single track of Magix DJ remixing software, mixing down to wav file then converting to MP3 at 128 kbps using MP3 freeware software. Not highly technical, but I think my subs. sound decent enough !!!
Good Luck with it. Lady Di

Hey, I have one of those Singing Machines too... but I didn't know you could hook it to the sound card (I'm on a laptop running through a port-replicator). Was the sound card external, then hooked to your laptop via USB? I'm interested to see if I can do that too.
For recording, I just use my laptop and Adobe Audition. I have two mics... one for the karaoke machine, and the other's a headset/mic combo for use with the laptop. The one for the karaoke machine is of high quality and I would prefer to use it, but I have to use a stereo-to-mono plug adapter for it, which reduces the in-line sound. So I just use the headset combo. I record in multi-track view using 3 tracks. One is the backing track, the other 2 are no-effect 16-bit stereo. Then I mix the 3 together... and don't look back.
Now, Cindy... if you could tell me how you manuevered that previous set-up, I'd be such a happy camper, because I'd really rather use the better mic.

I have my Yamaha CDG player connected with RCA jacks directly into the LINE IN on my SoundBlaster Live Card. I just sing from my mic plugged into my machine with my Adobe. I don't doing two tracks.... ...and i have a mixer that came with my SB card.

~ I was using a SoundBlaster external sound card that connected to my laptop via USB. The first card I had was an Audigy and for that I had to use a cord with 2 RCA ends on one end (connected to my Singing Machine) and the other end of the cord was a 1/8 inch single end that went into the "line in" of my sound card.
That card blew up a few months after I'd gotten it. My next card was a cheaper SoundBlaster external sound card (I think I paid like $40 for it at an office supply store) - it too connected via USB. That card had RCA jacks on it so then I could use regular RCA cables from my karaoke machine into my sound card.
I'm now on my 3rd sound card in like 7 months. This time it's a Toshiba MultiMedia Center, little more spendy and looks like it's probably made by SoundBlaster but labeled as Toshiba. This one is the one I have been using with that mixer - it's still external and connected to my laptop via USB>
But.... I run into trouble multi-tracking with probably because of the USB connection.
Did I make any sense or did I babble? Sometimes I tend to ramble....

I think I got it! Basically, I would need an external sound card of some sort... and I think I have like 3 cheesy ones laying around here. This place is a used computer-parts refuge... . I'll see if I can do that. Otherwise I might have to consider buying one. I'm getting tired of the combo headset. It gets on my nerves. I like HOLDING the mic in my hand. I feel like Garth Brooks or Britney Smears when I have that headset thingy on.

Thank you all for the suggestions ..this is all a bit uncomprehendable to me..I am computer savvy but recording ignorant..I wouldn't even know what a sound card looks like! I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite s209, a singing machine that's stored in my closet beccause I thought this darn VocoPro karaoke machine would be better, since it was considerably pricier ( yea, right) and have been recording off its' cassette then payng someone to transfer it to CD..then I convert it to mp3..
Someone mentioned Cool Edit Pro..looked at it on line and downloaded trial version just to see what it looked like...my head's spinning..
well, at least I can carry a tune...

your lap top have an on board sound card. less you can't listen to any sound.
when importing song go, file>open>go where yours song are and choose,. The file should be in wav. or mp3 and a few other formats but not midi.

Hooray!!! Went into my local Best Buy, spoke to the rep there and he said all I needed was a mini adapter for my laptop; that way my mike goes into that and I figured out how to use Audacity..what I have ended up doing is downloading song lyrics on the computer, A GIANT SIZE THANKS TO BADSINGER & CINDERELLA FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE

I'm getting the impression that I'm the only one who records my subs at karaoke bars. Everyone seems to be recording at home with their own karaoke equipment hooked directly into the computer.
I use an Akai GX-280D reel to reel taperecorder that I set up inthe bar. I get there early before the karaoke starts then I take it home and run it through my soundcard and record them as WAV files. These are what I use to burn the CD. I then use audio catalyst to convert them to MP3's to submit here.

Can't help, but I can really empathise with you. My lack of technical know how, together with my lack of time means it's unlikely that I'll ever be able to sub a decent recording...so it stops me subbing full stop!

It doesn't have to be extrernal. It can be internal

Mike... I'm using a laptop. No free PCI slots for another sound card. No free spaces for anything. It would have to be external. Oh well :announcer:
